Went and saw "Year of the Dog" with the Scapegoat guys last night. Really surprising and good. Check it out. Way more of an overwhelming AR message than expected. Not sure if it would change any minds or whatever, but it's got things we can all relate to. Curious to see what non-"animal folk" think about it.

Lauren Gazzola's recent thing in Jane Magazine, in case you haven't read it.
"May 5th, 2pm at Herbivore Store 5519 NE 30TH AVE — Everyday Dish Launch Party!
Accomplished author Julie Hasson has partnered with two other veganly famous and fabulous authors and chefs Dreena Burton and Bryanna Clark Grogan! The three have created a vegan cooking show DVD that features their strengths and our weaknesses…..dishes include Bryanna’s seitan cutlets, Dreena’s chocolate chip cookies, and Julie’s delish salsas.
Come meet Julie and celebrate "Cinco de Mayo", eat some snacks from the DVD, drink some limeade, hang out at Herbivore and have fun. We'll be screening the DVD and chatting with Julie from 2-4 pm."
We now carry Sharkies, just like REI.

Oh hi. So we just decided to start Potluck Sundays tomorrow. Be here with food at 1pm. Sunday is a funday, you better recognize.
New and improved and legible.
Hey, anybody out there want to swing by and pick up a flyer or two to put up for this great thing that's happening next Sunday? They're needed at "activist gathering spots" like... I dunno, Laughing Horse, coffee shop places, Free Geek, coffee shops.... wherever.

Justin from Veggielicious wanted us to post that he's hiring for Wednesday and Thursday shifts starting in mid-May. Anyone interested go to his website and email him your info.

Nice job Webly et al. Some places on here we'd never even thought of.
Still more awesomeness involving potty-mouth.
A friend writes:
"Thomas from Strike Anywhere has invited me to their show in Seattle (the VERA project) to set up a table for Vegan Outreach. Can you think of anyone that might want to go with me and help hand out info (and perhaps has some witty comebacks to the assholes who are sure to talk shit to us)? The show is on May 8th. I'll drive. I'll have the literature and hopefully, by then, a table!"
Leave a comment or email us and we'll put you in touch.
Other vandalism we endorse. Yeah, our attitude is so "rich."
Yo! Check it! We love the "dirty water" attack.
Thanks to whomever did this. Tag reads "Only psychos make jokes about mass murder!" It also says "Fuck you" which is a nice touch we think.
Beautiful.
"City officials in this metropolis of 11 million passed legislation banning billboards, neon signs and electronic panels as of the new year, and the effects of the law have begun to sink in. Billboards have been stripped of their commercial clothing, the stark nakedness of the abandoned frames reminding passers by of the once stolen public space now reclaimed."
Wheee! Just wrote the company to try and get 'em for the store. These are exciting. Thanks Ryan for the head's up.

"We're now accepting donations for this year's Shac7 Rummage Sale! You may bring your bagged/boxed and (preferably) sorted items to Food Fight during their business hours (10 am - 8pm).
It would be most helpful if you could bring your donations directly to our storage place, 4109 N Winchell St, on Sunday from 4:00 - 6:00 pm only. Please don't leave donations outside!
If you have large, heavy items like furniture that require several people to carry, please contact us with pictures first. We want to make sure it's something someone would buy. We would prefer such items to be brought to the Food Fight parking lot the day of the sale.
And of course, we need tables and clothing racks - if you'd like them back, just attach your contact info to them.
For more info, see our
Myspace page's
blogs: "Donation Guidelines" and "Where to bring your stuff". Feel free to contact us through myspace or at lineapeach@gmail.com if you need any help or have questions. Thanks!"
Just got a ton of awesome new chocolate in. Organic and fair trade: peanut butter cups, coconut cups, cranberry/ginger clusters, peppermint crisp disks, and peppermint crunch bars. So stupid good.
"Even a vegetarian can have a change of heart. Zach Schulman, a community garden organizer with Green Guerillas, a nonprofit group that helps establish and maintain community gardens in New York, considers himself mostly vegetarian. But he worked for a time at Bobolink Dairy and enjoys the veal raised there.
“I know the cows at the farm and have seen how they live and where they live and how they are treated,” Mr. Schulman said. “And it makes sense from an ethical standpoint, and it makes sense sustainably and in terms of supporting a small local farm.”
“Eating that veal felt right,” he added, “but it’s really just occasional — a few times a year.”
Thanks to SuperVegan.com for finding this.

"'The vice president is beating the same drums of war against Iran that he beat against Iraq under false pretenses, and he's doing it all over again, against Iran,' Kucinich said. 'And I say that it's time to stand up to that. Our country couldn't afford this last war. We can't afford to go into another one. And somebody has to challenge the conduct of this Vice President.'"
Just added vanilla hemp milk, some lube, and tattoo balm to the site.
Most of our books are back in stock. Except for the one you want.

Who out there is going to LA for this. We thinks we are.
"To be truly vegan sounds good but it’s not that easy to do. It takes a lot of research and effort. It's for people interested in fashion and in being eco friendly, trying to do their part, feeling better about a frivolous purchases."
This is great and all, but of course they never once mentioned the connection of
why an animal-free product helps the environment or even the diet and/or animal rights aspect of veganism at all.

If
"Super"Vegan.com wants to get into a cute battle with us, we're always ready to throw down. Although they haven't submitted a formal challenge, we can tell it could arrive any day. So, if you're reading this SuperVegans... do you really want more of where THIS comes from?
Geez. Here we go...
"Schumacher Furs LLC accuses two national animal rights organizations -- In Defense of Animals and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- of a vulgar pattern of harassment that included public nudity, obscene gestures, chants, insults and written threats of death or serious bodily injury."

Next First Friday dinner!
"Greetings everyone. I am writing to inform everyone about the spring series
of dinner parties at Junior's Cafe. The next dinner will be held the first Friday in May at 7:30pm.
For May and June you must come to Junior's and prepay before the dinner occurs. In exchange you will receive a ticket, a little reminder, as if you were going to a rock
show, but for food. By doing this, we will be able to make the dinner even better with higher quality produce and wine.
Come buy your tickets at Junior's between 8am and 2:30 pm. Stand-by seating will usually be accomodated.
The address is 1742 SE 12th. $25 for four courses of home cooked vegan food, including dessert. And, yeah, spring produce is here!
Come support the only fancy vegan dinner in town!
Thank you, Audra"

Check this out. Get involved. We should all do our SHAC buddies proud by getting our asses. Thanks IDA for organizing this stuff.
"World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) is April 22nd thru April 28th. Animals used in research desperately need our voices, as they suffer day in and day out. The labs that make these animals' lives a living hell routinely ignore the laws that exist to offer minimal protection from cruelty. Rather than trying to fix these problems, many would rather spend their energies and resources trying to hide them from the public.
NW IDA will be having events all week including a march to the OHSU campus beginning at the South Park Blocks on Sunday, April 22nd. A full listing of events is at the end of this article in the 'What You Can Do' section."
"We're in need of volunteers for this year's SHAC7 Rummage Sale, planned for May 12 (the day after Vegfest ends). I need a few people to help out with all the prep duties: contacting food vendors, making and posting fliers, posting on Craigslist and the like, and encouraging people to donate (and picking up donations, if need be), and sorting/pricing the donations. This can be very rewarding if you're willing to stick it out until the end.
We are also greatly in need of someone who could donate space to store the items. It would be best if you were close to Food Fight - and because we don't want the donations spread out all over the city, we need just a few people with big garages or spare rooms - big enough for lots of boxes, plus a few people who will be pricing all the stuff."
Wanna help out? Get in touch with
Lauren (lineapeach@gmail.com), it'll be fun. And appreciated.
"In his two years in the Mexican ring, Jairo has scored some victories that earned him the right to cut off the defeated bulls' ears. But he has also been trampled and knocked around."
Hey there. Check out all the work parties coming up at Lighthouse. They could use all the help they can get as they're relocating to a new spot.
"After the retailing giant laid out ambitious plans to offer organic food last year, farmers say it's backing off"
"The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up."

Thanks to everybody who came out last night to "Over the Edge." Along with the donations at the door and the food donations (yay Crystal and Amanda) we managed to scrape together $460 for the
SHAC7 commissary fund.

“It's pretty clear that the intention is that the observer is intended to witness potential conflict between the animals which frankly I think is kind of sick,” Fricker told the The Globe and Mail."
"HELP!! I'm relocating to Portland in a few weeks and I need a place to stay while I find permanent housing. The problem is that I live with three cats and it seems that no property mangement companies allow more than two cats. I'm vegan, professional, clean and quiet. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks."
Any ideas, write this person: cdx-3@excite.com
Come please. Cancel everything else. It just doesn't matter as much as this.

Join PETA’s Dan Mathews for a Book-Signing in Portland!
"On April 23, PETA VP Dan Mathews will be in Portland to discuss and sign copies of his new book, Committed: A Rabble-Rouser’s Memoir, which chronicles his wild 22 years (so far) on the front lines. From his impoverished childhood when he rescued alley cats from bullies to his notorious globetrotting with Pamela Anderson, Dan’s amazing book reveals why he dedicates his life to animal rights—and manages to have some fun along the way.
When: Monday, April 23, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Powell’s Books (3723 SE Hawthorne)"
""Out of respect for the sacredness of the lives of all living species, we invite the Holy Father to arrive at a choice of high religious and ethical value by giving up fur clothing for that occasion and for the future," the group's vice president, Roberto Bennati, said in a statement."

Thanks to our old friend
Paul Wilson for sending this. You British piece of crap...
Anybody going to see The Thermals tonight at the Hawthorne Theater? Me thinks I am. Yay?
"While university administrators were saying 'no' to activists, they were saying 'yes' to the media. Reporters and photographers were escorted into the lab for a rare and limited tour. How limited? We were allowed to shoot one room with two caged monkeys. The monkeys appeared to be in good health. 'All of our animals get that kind of care,' said
Professor Ray Gesteland, Vice President for Research at the 'U.'"
"'Real fur is lighter and better on your skin. So that is why young people should be wearing more.'"
So, last night I caught my first shoplifters. 3 teen "punk" girls who've been in before. So fucking lame. The funny thing, is that they were just asking about our email list and had just signed up. So now I have their addresses.... hmmm....

Such a fucking bummer. He was one of our favorite people in the world. I'll pour out a little of my soy late for my dead homey this morning.

"So, after visiting the farm again this Monday and grilling the farmers for documentation of humane standards and 'cruelty-free' practices, I still haven't been able to get a definitive answer. By all accounts, these farmers let their cows live out their natural lives without being sold for slaughter, but when I asked if I can have a visit with the elder cows, my request was denied. As far as I was able to tell, there were no old cows living out the rest of their natural lives while grazing happily in their pastures and, hence, no way for me to be absolutely sure that the farm is cruelty-free.
As of right now, Veggielicious will no longer be carrying dairy cheese, which makes the menu 100% vegan!
Now, mind you, this is a business. If the demand for vegan cheese dies down and the dairy demand rises, I don't know how I can logically defend the vegan-only stance to my main financier. SO COME SUPPORT VEGGIELICIOUS!
So far, business has been good. People are glad we're here, and so are we. Thank you all for your support, comments and criticisms. Look forward to our 'Egg' Salad and Chili in stores soon.

Awesome movie. A real story of teenage rebellion featuring a young Matt Dillon.
The kids get fed up. The kids take over. The kids don't like cops and let it show.
There will be an opening statement about the film sent to us by Mr. Jake Conroy, so that's pretty great.
We've done a crap job or promoting this, so please tell a friend and bring a friend.

"In June, Atlanta Hawks guard Salim Stoudamire abandoned his diet of junk food and animal-based foods to become the Hawks' only vegan player. "
" Come see Lisa and Tyler this Saturday at the first day of the Portland Farmers Market! Free samples, and lots of treats to buy. Also T-Shirts and a few aprons will be for sale!
If that isn't enough reason to stop by, I'm also selling the fist batches of my new pound cake recipe. Buy it and some strawberries and some soy whip from Food Fight and holy crap! deliciousness.

In case you ever thought about going to a Jamba Juice.
Just interesting to see this kind of thing appear in places like US News and World Report.
"When I had done my three-year research degree, I left. I had become someone who thought it was normal to kill animals on a daily basis and not be affected by it, which was somehow not really the person I wanted to be."
""Come be housemates with 2 very cool vegan queer girls, 2 very amazing dogs, and 2 stellar cats. We are late 20's/early 30's, respectful and fun, and sustainable living is important to us. Our house is big and beautiful and right off of Alberta (16th and Prescott)-mere blocks from the co-op, the park, Herbivore clothing, and other fun stuff like cafes and bars. It has hardwood floors, a fireplace, a big backyard, a huge kitchen, lots of storage, and a basement with washer/dryer. If you're interested, email: chaboush@riseup.net"
Come get the latest issue of Herbivore, in it's new crazy-ass format. The Will Potter article rules. Oh, and this issue marks the return of Peter Brandt and his stunning usage of the f-word.

Thanks to everybody who showed up, rain and shine, to the Shrine Circus thing this weekend. Totally great couple of days. All was smooth and we handed out tons of stuff. Like over 2000 coloring books, and who knows how much of the other stuff. Very few jerks, and some awesome moments with people turning around and leaving. Again, thanks to all of you who cared enough to come.
