So, we've been getting notices from all our suppliers regarding increases in costs, due to fuel, ingredients going up, etc. I'm sure this is no surprise to anybody that has been paying attention, but we've been avoiding acknowledging it. Until now. We're slowly going over all our prices and lots of things will be going up we're sure. This isn't anything specific to us, but we're sure it'll be felt/noticed more in smaller stores who can't buy in the giant quantities that the big guys can. Sorry in advance, and we hope you guys understand.

This adorable little guy was found abandoned at the fishing docks in the Dominican Republic (DR). I happened to be in the DR to attend the Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference and as always, when overseas, happened upon multiple opportunities to rescue animals.

The fishermen could not feed Doc and said that he would die if he stayed there. They asked me if I could help, so I brought Doc home on the airplane with me and now he is looking for a loving home.

He is three months old and has been vaccinated and dewormed. He is good with cats and kids and other dogs. He has personality plus and loves to tilt his head and show off his "flying nun" ears! I'm not sure what mixture of breeds he is but he will be a small dog.

They really feared vegans and their violent conspiracies to blow up buildings in protest to the republican national convention.

So after twenty minutes of bewildering suckups, they ask me if I’m in. They say there’s compensation if I assist in someone’s arrest. The Witness highlights the dramatic and inspiring personal transformation of a

5th Avenue Cinema, 510 SW Hall St, Portland, OR
Suggested Donation 5$ for “Let Live” NW Animal Rights Conference

Portland, Oregon — The Witness, a 43-minute film that has won six “Best Documentary” awards at film festivals across America will screen for one night only at 5th Avenue Cinema in Portland, OR. The Witness tells the inspiring story of Eddie Lama, a tough construction contractor from Brooklyn whose chance encounter with a kitten completely transforms his life. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist of the Los Angeles Times, Howard Rosenberg, said: “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important film about animals ever made.”

Lama's remarkable change in consciousness, from loathing animals to devoting his life to their protection, seems to be contagious. “I feel as though I have been walking around with a bag over my head, and my heart,” said one viewer in Albany, NY. “The difference those 43 minutes made in my perceptions are earthshaking for me.”

The film has received extraordinary support from everyday people, who have thus far organized several hundred community screenings in almost every U.S. state, in venues ranging from libraries and churches to college campuses and movie theatres, often with theatre owners donating the space for the events. The documentary has also been broadcast on independent film showcases of several regional PBS stations.

For his groundbreaking street level education work, Eddie Lama was honored with the Peace Abbey’s Courage of Conscience Award. Past honorees have included Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. "In my lifetime,” said Lama as he accepted the award, “I have been both the oppressor and the oppressed, both the fomenter of discord and the advocate for peace, both the perpetrator and the victim. But most significantly, I have been both the silence and the voice. It is the human voice that is the primary tool for change.”

“The Witness touches something very deep in audience members,” says producer LaVeck, “because it shows how any person, from any background, can change. Eddie Lama is living proof of something that we all hope and pray is true, that one person’s change of heart can change the world.” LaVeck and the film’s director, Jenny Stein, founded their non-profit production company Tribe of Heart, to fill an unmet need for films that explore the human potential to respond to injustice with creativity and non-violence. Tribe of Heart’s second film, Peaceable Kingdom, is currently on the film festival circuit and recently won a festival award for “enriching the human spirit through film.”

Josh Harper needs some company!

Hi there. Remember the SHAC 7? Remember Josh Harper? Well, we know you guys have been great in writing in the past, but his letters have lessened and lessened as time's gone by, and he's really needing some friends right now.

We know some of you have written in the past and didn't get repsonses, but you have to understand his situation. At one point or another, he was being moved or put in solitary and had his possessions thrown away (including letters), so he seriously might not have been able to.

He's in a stable cell now, so he will do his best to write back now. Please be understanding and patient. And remember, Josh is a funny guy, so if you're expecting him to write back a serious letter filled with deep understandings of life just because he's an AR prisoner, think again. Actually, most prisoners just want to correspond in a light-hearted and uplifting way. Can you blame them?

You all are the main thing he has to liven his spirits and give him an outlook into the outside world. We take it for granted, and this one little thing you can do makes so much difference to the people on the inside, you don't even know.

Please write Josh and the other SHAC 7 defendants.

Letter From A Vegan World

"#35 is a two-days old baby, his umbilical chord is still attached, his coat is still slick with birth fluids, his eyes are unfocused, his legs, wobbly. He is crying pitifully for his mother. No one answers. He will live his entire short life an orphan, his only experience of mother love will be one of yearning for it, his only experience of emotional connection, one of absence. Soon, the memory of his mother, her face, her voice, her scent, will fade, but the painful, irrepressible longing for her warmth will still be there. At four months old, he and other orphans like himself will be corralled into trucks and hauled to slaughter. As he will be dragged onto the killing floor, he will still be looking for his mother, still desperately needing her nurturing presence, especially at that dark time when he will be frightened and needing her more than ever in the midst of the terrible sights, and sounds, and scents of death all around him and, in his despair, in his want for a shred of consolation and protection, he, like most baby calves, will try to suckle the fingers of his killers.

He is the face of the 'rose' veal we are encouraging 'responsible restaurant leaders' to use."

But Emiko Badillo, who owns the store with her husband, Chad Miller, says she doesn't look at Yelp or their reputation online.

'I think people still appreciate that we're casual and that we're really putting our own personalities into the business,' Badillo says. 'We run this business mainly for the activism side of it and to inform people about veganism.'"

Sometimes you need dumb things to make you not think about dead sea lions for a minute.

Thanks to SuperVegan for helping us spread the word on Let Live. Oh, by the way, have you registered yet? Remember, there is limited space for all the workshops and speakers, so it's best to cough up that $10 (or more if you're able) sooner rather than later.

That greedy turd Will Potter is looking for a handout to print some kind of a handout. It's probably just some pro-life garbage like he's known for, but take a gander anyway.

Stuff getting spotlighted on Friday night at VegFest

"Two students from Aloha High School in Beaverton will be publicly recognized by a nonprofit organization for creating a short news video on the environmental impact of dietary choices.

The students, Lake Sartor and Kali Grischow-Byrns, have been invited by Northwest VEG to appear as guests of honor at the opening ceremony of Portland VegFest, where the video will be screened before a live audience. Environmental science teacher Sara Trakselis and broadcast journalism teacher Matt Fox are also being commended for their participation in the video project.

The video came to the attention of Northwest VEG through a "Real Teen" segment that was submitted to FOX 12 (KPTV). "Real Teen" is a series of news stories created by participating high schools for broadcast by the station and on the "Real Teen Reports" section of its website."

Hmm?

"The Humane Society doesn’t like the killing part, but has gone along with capture. The sea lions trapped so far have been sent to Sea World parks in San Diego and San Antonio, a policy that some other animal-rights advocates are none too happy with, especially after one of the seven captured last month died in custody during a medical inspection. So the motive for the shooting might have been to sabotage the trapping program, rather than to take revenge for salmon-snatching: It’s not clear whether the trapping will continue now that the cages have become bulls’-eyes."

Is the NYT hinting that AR folks might be responsible for shooting the sea lions in order sabotage the trapping?

Animals in need.

Looking for a new pal? Recently deceased Roger Troen leaves behind some pals in need.

"Tanner, Roger's 8 year old chow/collie dog. Roger liberated
Tanner from a dismal existence on a chain. In a true showing of
Roger's character, he refused to give up on this dog, even when
he bit the hand that fed him. Of all the members of Roger's
family in need of a home, Tanner is the most special case and
will need a very special guardian to take over his care. Someone
who can be a firm but benevolent alpha presence, and keep Tanner
safe from his fear of strangers that has historically gotten him
into trouble.

In addition to Tanner, these are the animals in need of homes
that Steve referenced:

Hildegard, an 8 to 9 year old female small short-haired
cream-colored shepherd mix who slept with Roger on his bed.

4 cats -- I know one is a tortoise short-hair cat, and another a
black and white tuxedo. Hildegard and the two cats slept on the
bed together.

2 rats -- one buff and one hooded.

If you would like to consider fostering, adopting, or just want
to see pictures and learn more about Roger's family members,
please contact me at matt@idausa.org or (503) 249-9996"

face plant

"But I've learned that sometimes the function of privilege, education, and the luxury of not dying from malnutrition can be used towards making a statement that all living things are equal. It’s the application of our dumb dietary luck of being born in this country that can illustrate the unfortunate fact that ignorance to the ridiculous bounty we’re able to access every day breeds the problem. If every person, and every vegan, used their brains along with their mouths we might be able to slowly devour the system that leads to cruelty, consumerism without compassion, and over-consumption in the first place."

A nice read from a Portlander learning about veganism. Leave a comment and some encouragement. And thanks to Ainsley for thinking about stuff.

Animal Liberation Conference - Olympia

"Evergreen Animal Rights Network and Olympia Animal Rights are hosting an animal liberation conference for the weekend of May 10th and 11th, 2008.

The aim of this conference is to provide an opportunity for activists to network, build alliances, and discuss how to further the goals of the movement. This conference is designed for people who have already accepted the premise of animal rights and are ready to take the next step. Although we don't presume to know what this next step should be, we hope that this conference will produce constructive results."

Why isn’t there more pressure to put the sport of kings under the umbrella of animal cruelty?"

Sustainable Seafood?

"Food Fight is full of overpriced, heavily processed, packaged vegan junk food. Its not whether its vegan or not that matters. What matters is human health and environmental sustainability. I'd rather eat fish, meat or eggs from a trusted local source than "vegan" food marketed by transnational corporations, made by underpaid workers and packaged in plastic and cardboard."
