Oops!

So the chicken wings we got in yesterday from Vegetarian Plus have whey in them. I guess they sent the wrong ones. If anyone bought them during the 47 minutes they were on the shelf, please return for a refund or come thrown them at us or whatever. No refund is available if you choose the throwing option. Sorry about that.

PETA says OHSU abusing primates

"Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, show that in 2007 scientists and staff at the Hillsboro center:

Allowed a monkey to suffer through labor for two days before giving it a Caesarean section, which claimed the life of the mother and infant.

Performed a surgery on the wrong monkey.

Left a sponge inside the abdomen of a baboon, causing an abscess that wasn't discovered until the animal was killed for an unrelated experiment.

Extracted semen 48 times from a monkey named Billy the Kid, a controversial procedure known as "electro-ejaculation" that injured the animal's penis."

SUNY Social Justice Conference 2008

NY area folks, this sounds cool:

"The SUNY Social Justice Conference, November 7-9 at SUNY-Binghamton, will be a staging ground for students, organizers, activists and allies to build a united movement across our diverse communities for solidarity and social change. Budget cuts and privatization close doors to public higher education, but the state's prison system drains away funds into an ever-expanding industrial complex. As more young people of color enter penitentiaries than enroll in the SUNY system, campuses reap the benefits of forced prison labor. As educators and students fight to be heard, the state suffocates the power of unions to organize and negotiate. And as endless wars rage overseas, vital resources are wrested from communities back home. Drawing upon the rich history of vital student participation in struggles for social change, we will gather in November to build new movements for justice. Join us for a weekend of organizing, learning, networking, and connecting, feauturing workshops, strategy-sessions, discussions and a keynote address by people's historian Howard Zinn. "

Announcing... the Let Live Series!!!

Announcing the Let Live Series, a monthly series of speakers, workshops, and social events. These events are dedicated to promoting and improving animal rights activism and community in the Portland area throughout the year, culminating in the annual Let Live Conference.

Let Live Series, Part 1: Monkey Business. October 26th, 2 pm, PSU Campus in the Smith Memorial Union, room SMU228

The first event is "Monkey Business: The Truth About Animal Testing and the ONPRC." If you have ever had trouble discussing the difficult topic of vivisection and animal testing, or need to brush up on your knowledge, this event is for you. Elaine Close (Coatlition to Abolish Animal Testing) and Matt Rossell (In Defense of Animals) will be discussing the bad science, bad treatment, and useless studies that surround the bulk of animal testing, focusing on the ONPRC (Oregon National Primate Research Center.) We will talk about what goes on at the primate lab, what you can do about it, and ways you can more effectively discuss this topic with others.

This event is free and open to the public. It is being sponsored by Vegans for Animal Advocacy as well as Food Fight! and Herbivore.

ONPRC Demo 10/21

Just got this from PETA. We're feeling like this might be a good chance for an anti-Primate Center campaign to pick up some steam. There seems to be a lot of potential energy in Portland right now and we're hoping a lot of you folks can join us out there. People can also meet up here at the mini-mall at like 11:00 to do some ride-sharing if you'd like.

"During a four month undercover investigation in 2007, a PETA investigator experienced firsthand the anguish that the animals at Oregon Health Sciences University's (OHSU) Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) endure every day. Animals were forced to eat food from their waste trays, were terrorized when they were chased and caught in group cages, and suffered severe psychological trauma.

ONPRC continues to confine more than 4,000 monkeys who are used in cruel taxpayer-funded studies in which monkeys are separated from their mothers to induce psychological damage; forced to eat lard in obesity experiments; exposed to nicotine, alcohol, and infectious diseases before they are ultimately killed; and more.

Monkeys don't belong in laboratories, nor do they deserve to needlessly suffer in the name of greed. Please join PETA next Tuesday to speak out in their behalf.

When: Tuesday, October 21, 12 noon–1 p.m.
Where: OHSU Marquam Hill Campus, 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland, Ore.
Note: Please meet under the pedestrian bridge at the main OHSU hospital. We encourage carpooling and taking public transportation on Trimet bus #8, as parking is difficult.

The carpool will leave at 11 a.m. from 5428 N.E. 30th St. To RSVP for the carpool, call Matt Rossell at 503-249-9996. For other information, please contact Justin Goodman at JustinG@peta.org. All materials will be provided, so just bring yourself, your friends, and your family members!"

Take Action: Urge Zappos.com To Stop Selling Fur

"Zappos, an online retailer, knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed garment or accessory, but the company continues to contribute to that suffering by using fur. With so many fashionable, comfortable alternatives available today, there is no excuse for Zappos.com to continue using the fur of tortured animals in its designs.

Animals killed for their fur spend their entire lives exposed to all weather conditions in cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods—including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning—and these often ineffective methods sometimes leave animals still conscious when they are skinned.

Please join us in urging Zappos.com to follow the lead of other designers and retailers—including Nike, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, Gap, Stella McCartney, and others—who have already adopted permanent fur-free policies."

Hey everybody, we've been really getting nailed with all the fees involved with taking credit cards, so... we're changing our rules. There is no longer any minimum purchase to take credit/debit cards, BUT we are now charging a $0.25 surcharge to all credit card purchases. Sorry if this seems jerky, but we gotta do what we gotta do. And cash is still wonderful and encouraged.

NOTE: This does not apply to food stamp cards, no charge or minimums on those.

Monkey Needs a Home

"Meet Monkey, a sweet, neutered, Red Bone Coonhound mix (possibly some Vizsla), about 4 years old, who has been living at the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society (WCGHS) in Washington since October, 2007. Monkey's previous owners were forced to surrender him due to a neighbor dispute, in which Monkey had suffered some physical and emotional abuse at the hands of this neighbor.

WCGHS is a small non-profit "no kill" animal shelter in Washougal, WA. They don't have the facilities to keep a big playful hound like Monkey happy and healthy. The kennels are 12 foot indoor/outdoor areas and very small play yards.

Monkey was used to running free on 30 acres while with his previous owners so he is not doing too well in a shelter environment being so confined. He is getting depressed and a little stir crazy. He just needs some love, attention and lots of playtime. Monkey would also love to take you for a walk, too! He has a wonderful expressive face, and really needs a place to run and just be a dog. He gets along well with other dogs, loves to play with puppies and loves people. He is such a sweet, big baby boy just willing to please! "
