"Sending a powerful message that the rights of hunters will not be infringed upon"
Thursday, June 28, 2007
"The vegetarian snack food Veggie Booty has been recalled after public health officials identified it as the source of a salmonella outbreak that has afflicted mostly children under 10 years old, including four in Washington."

"Every 2 weeks CAAT, including this Sunday, CAAT (Coalition To Abolish Animal Testing) volunteers go out in the community and put door hanger flyers on doors. The campaign has been ongoing for over 5 years and has distributed over 60,000 doorhangers in the greater Portland area."
"Kobayashi's hopes of defending his coveted Yellow Mustard Belt at Nathan's Famous Fourth"

"'Is that a political label? It sure sounds like one,' said David Iglesias, the New Mexico federal prosecutor who recently touched off a firestorm when he accused Republicans of politicizing the U.S. Justice Department."

"A vegan mother of 10-year-old quintuplets has “serious psychological control issues” and won’t let her children eat meat, eggs or dairy, according to the father who is seeking primary residential custody of their five children, reported Emily Nipps in the St. Petersburg Times."
Nice thing in the New York Ttimes concerning
Nina Planck's stupid op-ed piece. Also of note, she will be in town
at Powell's soon. It'd be nice to have some knowledgeable folks on hand to handle any inaccuracies she may spit out.
"Charles Boring, the Fulton County prosecutor who handled the case, told me it was “absolutely not” about veganism. Planck and Shipley said they were aware of the prosecutor’s contention. Shipley said, “We were also aware, though, that the convicted couple continues to insist that they were trying to raise their infant on a vegan diet.”
But the jury didn’t believe them, and leaving that out put Planck’s whole column on a shaky foundation."

'This extraordinarily important book cuts to the heart of one of the central reasons movements to bring about social and environmental change always fail. The fundamental question here is: is violence ever an acceptable tool to bring about social change? This is probably the most important question of our time, yet so often discussions around it fall into clichs and magical thinking: that somehow if we are merely good and nice enough people, the state will stop using its violence to exploit us all. Would that this were true.'—Derrick Jensen, author of
EndGame, from the Introduction
Dear Jordan,
You are a great guy and we're sorry about all your bad luck recently. Come in and get a free sticky bun and a hug.
Your friends,

"The FBI’s top terrorism officer has described ALF as a terrorist group that uses criminal violence against the fur industry, restaurants and animal research labs. On its Web site, ALF says it works to reduce animal suffering and that its actions “may be against the law.”"

"Geese force-fed and then slaughtered for their livers may get their final revenge on
people who favor the delicacy known as foie gras: It may transmit a little-known disease known as amyloidosis, researchers reported on Monday."
Just got word that Josh Harper is out of the hole after almost 100 days in. So thats really nice to hear.
For a look at what got him in so much trouble,
read this crap.
Oh yeah, more good news, looks like the appeals process is finally under way too. A start at least. More news over the summer hopefully. Keep those fingers crossed and letters coming.
And another thing, Andy sent in an
update from prison too.
"On June 16th, ten activists on the HLS Shut Them Down tour were arrested in Chicago. Two were minors and were not charged, while the other eight are facing three misdemeanor charges each, and one is facing one felony charge. Two activists' cars were impounded and searched, and police are holding property for investigation. The case will bring several activists from out of state back to Chicago for court up to six or seven times, and as legal fees are already piling up, we are seeking support from the community."
Some jerks through a big cement block through our front door this morning at about 2am. Sitting here waiting on the glass folk to come fix our door. Bummer, right? All they took was about $15 worth of loose change, totally missing the donation jars with all the big cash. Fucking amateurs.

Yay! Good news! Fuck yeah!
Please foster this dog!
A customer of ours wrote to us asking for help:
"I work as a social worker in a gresham nursing home. one of our residents has a schipperke/chiuahua mix dog, 8 years old (black female; she doesnt like kids) that he obviously cant care for now, and his daughter states she wont care for it and will take it to the pound. i've convinced her to keep the dog for a little longer, while i try to find a home for her. i'm looking for a compassionate person willing to provide a home (may be temporary, if he rehabilitates; could be long term.) do you know of any people to hook me up with?
thank you, amy thomas"
If there is anyone out there willing to foster or possibly adopt her? Please get in touch with Amy: acatherine13@yahoo.com
Amy says she gets along with other dogs. We will try to post a picture of her soon.

Phone Tree Help Needed
"Phone Tree Help Needed
NW In Defense of Animals has what I call a phone tree. How it works is I print out the names of our supporters from our database who have phone numbers in the Portland, OR or Vancouver, WA area. Each sheet has 30 names on it and then I mail a copy to IDA volunteers who have offered to help. When an important event comes up, like Fur Free Friday for example, I email out a script to the volunteers and ask them to call the people on their phone tree list and remind them of the upcoming event. It usually involves about 4-5 events a year. It’s also a good way to update our database information in case people’s phone numbers and/or addresses change.
Right now I’m updating our phone tree lists because we have so many new members, which is a good thing, but now I need more people to help with the phone tree. It’s a great way to help NW IDA without having to leave the comfort of your own home and believe me, it’s a huge help! I need at least 35 volunteers and right now I only have 10. If you think you could help with the phone tree please contact me at 503-249-9996 x3 or connie@idausa.org. I won’t bother you very often?.honest. Connie"

Hooray for "Cost Plus" contracts!

Full trailer for
The Ten is up. Yay!
Dying to see this film. Saw the photo exhibit a while back in NYC and it was amazing.
"Before they were purchased by the Georgia Aquarium, Ralph and Norton were headed for the dinner table in Taiwan, where whale sharks are legally slaughtered for food. The Taiwanese refer to the species as the 'tofu shark' due to the color and texture of its flesh."
This looks awesome. Be the first on your block...

"The power plant is a novelty on the prairie, the first in the country to burn animal litter (manure mixed with farm-animal bedding like wood chips). And it sits at the intersection of two national obsessions: an appetite for lean meat and a demand for alternative fuels."

Good site. Add it to your check-it-daily list.
"Under pressure from animal rights activists, two soft drink giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsico, have agreed to stop directly financing research that uses animals to test or develop their products, except where such testing is required by law."

"Please come march in defense of Planned Parenthood on
Thursday, June 7th at 6 pm.
The site of a future Planned Parenthood-corner of NE Martin
Luther King Blvd and NE Beech-is being protested daily by the
anti-choice movement. In response, the Direct Action
Reproductive Rights Coalition has organized a counter-protest
to show solidarity with and support of Planned Parenthood.
This is not a question of morality-this is a question of
healthcare. Planned Parenthood is a public health cornerstone,
providing low cost and free Pap smears, prostate exams, breast
exams, STD testing, and well-woman exams, as well as various
reproductive services. It is a service provider that the community
cannot afford to lose.
We will meet at the corner of NE MLK and Beech, at 6 pm, on
Thursday, June 7th. Please come show your support!"

Hi all. Just wanted to send a head's up about Pawsitively Pit Bull. I've been volunteering there for the past few months, and there are so many amazing dogs there that need homes or just some one-on-one play time. If you have an extra hour or two a week and want to do good, please consider volunteering with the dogs. The next volunteer orientation is Sunday, June 10th at 2pm at the Belmont Library.
Or if you've maybe been thinking of adopting an amazing canine, get in touch with them. I (Emiko) know these furry friends personally and can give you some detailed descriptions of any of them.
