Look, I'm selling my bass head. Wanna buy it? It looks super tough.
Just got these SHAC7 benefit CDs in. If you're not into the vegan straightedge hardcore, you might not be into this. But those 3 of us in Portland who are, you'll be stoked. Damn, the Requiem track itself is worth the price...
Got this book in too. Looks really interesting.
Just got this book in. Looks great. Come get one and we'll read it together over a hot tea and toast.
Sad that it took me drinking some egg albumen from Stumptown to make it into a "Totally Not Vegan" comic. Fame always comes at a price. I will forgive you Chris, but first you'll have to pay in our Gross Out Eating Contest on Sunday.
A nice story and a reminder about the Ringling Bros protests today and this weekend. More info
here.
"A tame female elephant has fled an Indian circus after eloping with a wild bull elephant that broke open a gate and led her off into the jungle, her distraught handler said today."

"These same die-hard animal protectors would hardly hesitate to order up a 12-piece chicken dinner at a local fast-food establishment.
And they’d jump through flaming hoops to order filet mignon at a local steak house.
Are poultry and beef excluded from animal protection? Have they not made the supreme sacrifice for the banquet table?
Would animal rights activists protest while reaching for another helping of lamb chops that the food on the table died of natural causes?
I have a niece in law school in Pittsburgh who claims to be a vegetarian. Only thing is, if we passed an upscale restaurant when she was in high school, her taste buds would scream for roast beef or New York strip."

Dear you. Don't bring food this Sunday. There will be no potluck. Just a ton of people who will eat whatever food you bring. Come get a hot dog and ice cream or something. Just come hang out.
We just loved the headline on this.
"The conservative Republican, who has spoken out against gay rights and same-sex marriage, said he would announce next month, as planned, whether to seek re-election next year."
Don't forget to lend a hand if you can.
We still need a few more people to sign up for the sticky bun eating contest! Come on folks, you get to eat free sticky buns and the chance to be #1. Who doesn't want to be #1?

"Vegans give off this kind of moldy cabbage odor, and usually they have very poor posture. It's because they don't get enough protein to stand up straight. It's too much work for their muscles, if they have any at all. Now there are exceptions to the rule, but not many. They also whine and carry on about nearly everything. That's because their supposedly healthy body is in a constant state of immflammation from not eating any meat."

"The department has suspended use of pork products in an attempt to appease religious adherents and will continue to serve vegetarian and vegan meals. It said many Jews and Muslims could choose the vegan option, which is free of any animal products, to adhere to their faiths."
Download a flyer by clicking your mousey thing on the link above. Then print several. Then post them around the town in places where you think somebody might notice and give a crap.
"The Kenyan Wildlife Service told the BBC that it was not unusual for monkeys to harass women and be less afraid of them than men, but they had not heard of monkeys in Kenya making sexually explicit gestures as a form of communication to humans."

"“It’s a cultural thing, I think,” Foxx said. “Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, Mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.”"

Sticky Bun eating contest! Thanks to Dovetail for donating goods.
"Grand juries aren’t so benign. True, in Law & Order, and in real life, they help bring indictments against bad guys. But they can also be used to push a political agenda. They can intimidate, harass, and imprison political activists. They’ve been used against suspected communists, against antiwar activists , against Black Panthers, against independent journalists like Josh Wolf, and they’ve been used frequently against the environmental and animal rights movements (recently in the case of Jeff Hogg, and activists in California)."

"The Portland Legal Defense Network and the National Lawyers Guild are hosting the Midnight Special Law Collective to do some trainings for the activist community.
Some of these are going to be really informative and helpful for people involved in direct action, civil disobedience and protests/demonstrations etc. The trainings are THIS weekend at People's (3029 SE 21st).
It's free, but we will take donations to help cover the costs of them driving up from the Bay Area. The Legal Support Training is basically a jail support training. The KYR Trainers Trainings will help groups host their own KYR Trainings.

Today would be a good day (for us) if you stocked up on some frozen stuff. We gotta make some room as our freezer situation is now super dumb.
We also just got chewing gum in, so try it out too. It's called B Fresh, and comes in several flavors. 100% RDI of B12 too, so that's cool.
Come check out some metal and throw money towards
Family Dogs New Life, cuz they're nice.
"I think it should be crystal clear by now that industry groups are NOT drawing the line at underground, illegal activity. That’s not the point of their terrorism rhetoric and terrorism legislation. The point is to instill fear in the mainstream, above-ground, animal advocacy movement."
Great new column. Good links to follow. Yay Will Potter.

"Rice said he is considering eating salmon occasionally, mainly in social situations so it is easier for him and his family to enjoy a meal out. "
"Mormons... do...your...duty!"
"Teresa Platt, spokeswoman for Fur Commission USA, a nonprofit representing more than 600 American mink farmers, called the trespassers' release of the minks an act of 'ecoterrorism.'"
Ok. Remember our freezer broke and then we got another one a few weeks ago? Well, that one just died on us too. So, be prepared. We're going to be limping along for a few weeks (hopefully not much longer than that), using some of our storage freezers in it's place. There won't be a glass front, but we'll fill it up as much as we can and make some signage so you know what's in there. Please hold tight with us while we figure stuff out. It's been a shitty day so far.
Sometimes the world needs a big slap.

"Please join us again on Saturday, August 11, 2007, from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM. Last Saturday's gathering was so successful that we're continuing the energy again. We welcome the folks from the peace rally, and are offering our famous 'IM-PEACH' Vegan Ice Creme -- hurry while supplies last.

"When Anderson reached down to pick it up he says the snake head twisted around and bit his index finger. He says if felt like his hand was in a fire pit."
Damn damn damn fine food at Nutshell. No tofu or meat analogs. Crazy ass vegetable stuffs. All the food is vegan. Unfortunately, all the alchohol is not, so be careful. But at least they're well labeled for you must-drink types.
3808 N Williams. 503-292-2627. Open 11:30 - 10pm. Cash only.
PS. Does an otherwise all vegan restauant that has non-vegetarian wine (isinglass) get relegated to our "Good Options" section of our PDX Guide? Or do we make another section called "All Vegan Except for the Stupid Wine and Beer"?
Thursday, August 09, 2007
We're getting 12 dozen Might O donuts delivered here tomorrow after 2pm. First come, first serve. NO HOLDS! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Check out this thing the the new issue of Herbivore (online only). The whole TAFA conference has been a big bummer in our minds lately, and... this editorial sums up why.
"“You people are like another species, you have such a disconnect from these animals. And you talk about how you love them, and you respect them…all these animals are gonna be killed because they taste good, and because these people continue to exploit and profit from their flesh, their fiber…are we not more abolitionist, do we turn our cause to bigger cages and not empty cages? I think it’s shameful…”"
Think this will including any info on the effects of meat eating on the environment? Really? How much ya wanna bet?
Fresh cake, cheesecake, and cupcakes just came in from Sweetpea.
Remember that awesome poster made for the SHAC7 Benefit show last summer? There are still a few around, and they are still nice and the money will still go to the SHAC7 Support Fund. Perfect for your cubicle.

"Get that pile of junk out from under your bed and over to our next garage sale. Another chance to let your clutter help animals. We are having another sale this time to buy winter hay for a local farm animal sanctuary. The last sale helped pay veterinary bills for rescued animals, feed, and even enough for two live cat traps for feral cat rescue. That tacky Christmas gift would make a wonderful addition to our next sale tentatively scheduled for August 25th.
Donations can be left on the porch at 2907 NE Weidler Street (yellow house) across from the Hollywood Fred Meyers anytime. For pick up or more info call Kit Collins at 503-493-9155 (work) or 503-756-8652 (cell). Thanks!"
Just got in a good selection of these frozen taquitos and rolled tacos. Looks to be fried fake meaty goodness. Come try 'em out.

"The reason nonhuman animals lack protection is simply due to the economic repercussions that would accompany such protection(s). Compassionately caring for animals is expensive and by demanding corporations treat food and research animals humanely activists are asking nothing less than a fundamental reworking of the world economy."
"A federal judge sentenced Jonathan Paul to four years and three months in prison for his role in a 1997 fire that destroyed the Cavel West horsemeat packing plant in Redmond, Ore. He had confessed to helping make the diesel and soap mixture, the s0-called “vegan Jell-O,” that was used, and acting as a lookout."
So, Veggielicious has been sold but will stay vegan. Somebody moving to town from Wyoming bought it. Plans to expand the menu a bit too. Cool, huh? Looks like they'll be closed for a couple of weeks while he moves to town, but they'll be back.
