Dang. We already ran out of cardboard boxes. If any of you out there have or can easily get cardboard boxes to for us to move with, please bring them by the old store anytime tomorrow. You can just drop them down in the patio area if need be.
So, in case you didn't know, for our last 2 days here, everything is 15% off if you pay with cash. 10% off with a card. We don't want to have to move all this product over to the new spot, really. Heavy jars of Vegenaise, soda, soy milk, heavy stuff like that will be a drag. So come buy it today please. And save yourself some money.
Our Sharkwater screening was cancelled a while back. We were told the distributor was showing the movie a couple days before our screening, so they could meet the deadline to get an Oscar nomination, so we figured it might ruin our chances of getting a big enough crowd, and since it's not that cheap to rent out the Hollywood, AND since we're in the middle of moving the store, we cancelled. Sorry.
The Hollywood Theatre website says it's showing this weekend, so you should call them and get an exact time and date.
Ok. Listen up, for real this time. Please hold off on ordering from us until November 4th. Your orders will be delayed by at least a week and we're going to be out of stock on most things until then. Please don't hate us. We're moving and we'll be able to add more products for you to gobble up. Patience.
"'The apes are going wild! An animal-rights activist sneaks into a research facility and lets all the monkeys out of their cages. Collect TWO RED diseases from any player(s).'"
Warning order at your own risk. We are in the middle of moving to a new building! If you put an order in and we are out of something chances are we will be out for a couple weeks. We will contact you to let you know of your options from there out. Thanks for understanding! We love you! Don't ever change!
Sad news. A good guy passed away today. Lance Hahn, singer/guitarist of J Church and Cringer (not to mention a million other influential punk rock projects).
J Church is a favorite band for both of us, and it seems like even though we didn't know him, he was a part of our lives for a long time from listening to his music. Lance had kidney disease and was on dialysis, something we're both too familiar with, so we sympathize extra hard for his friends and family. He was only 40 years old.
Hey everybody. Now is your chance to comment on what new products we should consider for our new space. Please leave as specific of comments as you can, so we can find 'em. We're gonna have double the refrigerated space now and some bulk too. So... yeah, get to thinking. What do you have to get elsewhere that you'd rather give us money for? Thanks.
So, heres our chance. Taqueria Los Gorditos (50th and SE Division) is trying out being exclusively vegan on Sundays to see how it flies. Limited hours, from noon to 3pm. But only vegan items served. Let's all get there and show them their business could thrive with a veg*n menu only. We have their vegetarian and vegan menus here if you want one. And you can call in orders now too. Yay.
PS. Hey Julie, send us a PDF so folks can download the menu, ok?
More bummer news. Daily Grind will be closing down in a couple of weeks. A big loss to the neighborhood. Damn it. Hopefully Pappa G's will be finding a new home for it's Vegan Hot Bar sooner rather than later.
Sad news. Sounds like Three Little Figs Market in Boulder is closing down at the end of the month. Sounded like a great place run by nice folks. They're gonna stay active and busy it seems, so all is not lost. But the store seems to be.
"The Portland Animal Defense League will be hosting a benefit show for Janice and Nick (the two East Coast anti-HLS activists that were recently indicted in NJ and facing up to 6 years of prison each), and would like to invite everyone out for a formal launching of the Portland-ADL chapter.
"'10-10-2007 Brescia Tonight 2 rabbits, 13 ducks, 2 rats, 10 mice, 9 hens/chickens and about 200 chicks have had their lives changed, freed from the cages of a vivisection lab and safe from the experiments and death they were destined for. For these animals the dream to live free, play in the grass and enjoy sunlight, has come true."
"Lilly was found near the Wheatland Ferry (near Salem, Ore.) where she was dumped with five other littermates. At only seven weeks of age, it's amazing that Lilly survived, and of her siblings she was the sole survivor. And....she was extremely lucky to survive because when she was finally rescued, she had been attacked by a raccoon.
But...she did survive. Her injury has healed and her stitches have been removed. She's now nine weeks old and she has been spayed and vaccinated and she is looking for her furever home. She is a purr-wagon and a hugger. She loves to be loved and deserves some stability and contentment after all she's been through in her young life.
To inquire about Lilly, please call Connie at (503) 249-9996 ext. 3 or (360) 666-1578 or email at connie@idausa.org."
For our friends on the other coast: Peter Young is speaking at Brooklyn Law School on Monday, October 22. Go listen. It's a free event (with free vegan cheese pizza, too!), but you better empty your pockets into the donation jar anyway.
October 22, 2007 5:00PM - 8:00PM food will be served (vegan, of course) FREE (donations suggested)
Brooklyn Law School's Subotnick Center 250 Joralemon Street (at corner of Boerum Place -- it's near Borough Hall) Subway: 2, 3, 4, 5 to Borough Hall Station. M, R to Court Street Station. A, C, F to Jay Street-Borough Hall Station.)
We have no idea what this is. Haven't tried it yet. Some kind of pate. Looks fancy. Anybody ever had something like this? We got 6 of 'em yesterday, who's brave enough to buy one first?
Also, we got some new Indian Snack mixes that are really good.
And, oh yeah, our new place is getting painted today, and floors are getting done on Saturday. Holy crap. Nervous to see it. And refrigeration is coming on Monday. Anybody strong want to help get it in the new spot? Holla if you're available and interested. Might not be too bad, but it's always good to have a few extra arms around at these times.
So, just to let you know what's going on with the move and our store being closed for a bit.
We're gonna close the store up on Monday, Oct 29th and hopefully reopen on Sunday, November 4th. The online store will be down too, as we don't want to have to worry about that stuff for a week or so. We'll shut it down Thursday afternoon (the 25th) so we can ship orders out on Friday, but it'll be down till we can get functional at the new spot. Hopefully not too long so we don't go broke.
Also, we're gonna need your help. We're going to try and sell off the products on our shelves and not restock till it's at the new spot. We'd appreciate you to stock up at un-sale prices, but we'll be dicounting stuff the weekend before the move too.
Our friend, Lantz has stepped up and is adopting our new friend, Dot the cat. She's been living here the past week, and we're gonna miss her, but luckily she'll still be within visiting distance. Sniffle sniffle, a bittersweet good bye to the lovely, Dot. She's gonna be happy in her new home.
"Sounds a lot like the Boston pet shop that burned down, and had "No more exploitation of animals" spray-painted on the storefront. Turns out the owner was trying to use fear of "animal rights extremists" for an insurance scam."
"Still, as evidence mounts that cutting back on beef would both improve our health and help stave off global warming, a campaign urging people to do so is clearly in order. It's understandable why political candidates are wary of bashing beef, but less understandable why environmental leaders with nothing to lose are reluctant to raise the issue. They would be more credible in targeting polluters if they were equally assertive in pointing out what all Americans can do to fight global warming, and at the very top of that list -- way ahead of more commonly mentioned approaches such as buying fluorescent lightbulbs or energy-efficient appliances -- would be eating less red meat."
"Eating contests?!! Disgusting to devalue food and elevate consumption, particularly in a world where starvation isn't unusual. How American. How un-vegan. Unconscionable. I'm really disappointed in you guys."
Always nice to get a comment like this first thing in the morning. Really affirming to know it's worth trying to do the right thing while not getting overwhelmed with all the sadness and bullshit in the world. Sorry "Anonymous." Sorry World.
So, a warning if you're considering taking this cat.
He REALLY likes to "make biscuits" on your hoody. And doesn't seem to really care if you're allergic to his dander. Also, the little fucker will curl up on your lap while you're trying to do important "Grocer" work like delete 15 SPAM emails about expensive watches that are GUARANTEED to triple your ejaculate. So, yeah, be warned.
"How is that a nation of people who spend $40 billion dollars on their animal companions and donate billions more to animal related charities, have ended up with an animal shelter system that is the leading cause of death for healthy dogs and cats in the United States?"
We found a lost cat this morning. We're hoping she is this missing cat we saw on a flyer the other day. The woman who made the flyer is coming here later today to see if it's her cat, but we're a little skeptical since her cat has a bald spot under her chin, and this cat doesn't. But we'll see...
She looks like she's been in the elements for some time. She was starving and she had a flea collar wrapped around her midsection that was on so tight it was matted into her fur and left her with a soar area. She has no other obvious signs of physical trauma, but we're going to take her to the vet if the woman doesn't claim her. She's content and quiet right now after a good meal and taking that dumb flea collar.
So, we're thinking of Plan B in case this cat isn't hers. This is where we ask for help. We're looking for anyone who may want to adpot this cat and/or foster her. We want to try to find her a home through this blog page rather than Craigslist or taking her to the Humane Society, so please, anyone interested, please get in touch.
Wednesday October 31st will be Kevin Kjonaas' 30th birthday. As you can all imagine, prison is not the place that Kevin would want to celebrate his 30th birthday, but none the less, he is proud to have taken a stance against Huntingdon Life Sciences, even if it was LEGAL! Kevin would love to get letters from his friends. If you want to include a gift, let him know that you sent a donation to his legal fees (which currently stand at roughly $30,000.00)
Kevin's Legal Defense Fund PO. Box 1419 Maple Grove, MN 55311-6419 CHECKS MUST be made out to Kevin Kjonaas c/o Aaron Zellhoefer

"Stumptown Earthfirst! is having a vegan potluck on friday, oct. 12 around 6:30pm
where: 32 NE Fremont (this is the se corner at the intersection of williams and fremont)
everyone interested in EF! is invited to come. it's a great oppritunity to network with like-minded folks and get involved in a no compromise group that has always had deep roots in the Pacific Northwest.
So, the last couple of days have not been very good, to put it lightly. And this morning made things a bit worse. But then I was sitting at the computer and found this (in partial thanks to Will Potter) and it lifted my spirits. It makes no sense, don't try to figure it out. Just laugh.
Check out the great review of Los Gorditos. Then go down there and get fed by some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Also, before you go off on us for promoting a place that sells meat, believe us when we say they are at a tipping point and it wouldn't be a big surpirse if they went all vegetarian if they thought their family's business could survive on it. Their meat sales have already been cut in half by the recent surge in vegan business and all the new vegan menu items. Show 'em some love.
Just took down our old calendar. It was getting too clogged up with spam. This will be simpler and you folks just have to tell us what to put on it instead of posting for yourself.
Sunday (the 14th) is SHAC7 benefit movie night. This month's selection is Kingpin, featuring Scapegoat Tattoo's very own Brian Wilson as an extra. Come and see if you can spot him. As always, $3, 8pm-ish at The Artistery (43rd and Division). Spread the word for us, and come get offended.
Books to Oregon Prisoners is an all-volunteer run project who distribute books free of charge to prisoners giving them the opportunities for self-empowerment, education, and entertainment behind bars. They're currently looking for a bigger, more permanent space.
Does anyone out there have or know anyone with a free or cheap space they can use? Here are the general requirements they're looking for:
80 feet of shelf space (e.g. 4 bookcases with five 4' shelves), 4' x 8' storage plus enough room for five people to work comfortably around a folding table. Storage is less important if there is more shelf space.
Anyone with information please contact Tony: tfpdx@yahoo.com
"Topps Meat Company announced Friday that it is closing its entire operation effective immediately, due to the financial impact of the recall of 21.7 million pounds of ground beef that were potentially contaminated by E.coli bacteria."
"We have been working for some time now to expose Vanderbilt's abysmal animal welfare record, and I will keep you updated as this case progresses. In the meantime, please take a moment to contact Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos at this e-mail address to ask that Schall be immediately removed from his post pending an investigation into these horrific allegations."
Event reminder! Will Potter and Peter Young speak!
Please try and make it out to the super cool event we have put together for Thursday, Oct 4th. Two hot shot out-of-town speakers brought together to make you think about stuff.
Peter Young and Will Potter (of GreenIsTheNewRed.com). 7pm at Clinton Street Theater. $5 suggested donation will go to activist legal support.
Read here for the official press release and more details. Also, there is a rumor that after the talk (around 9pm) we'll be screening the classic tale of government repression, Smokey and The Bandit.
Oh shit, our new produce cooler is shipping to our new location next week. Also, most of our electrical and plumbing is done, most of the sheetrock is up, and we're getting stairs built tomorrow to go into our giant storage loft. Damn, its fun getting into debt.
Oh geez, will somebody out there take this guy? Please? Saving a dog is Direct Action.
"My name is Smokey and I'm approx. a 9 year old Collie-mini Shepherd mix. I have spent years chained to a dog house in Damascus, Oregon. The old man who was supposed to take care of me couldn't even take care of himself. I was fed once a week and frequently did not have enough water. My hair was deeply matted and filthy. It took hours to clean and shave off years of neglect. Even so, I am a loving, affectionate, gentle, cheerful companion and I get along with cats and other dogs (but I'm submissive and it's hard for me to stand my ground). Until I was rescued 6 weeks ago, the only life I knew was within the length of my chain. I just want someone to love me as much as I could love them. If you can help, please contact Matt at In Defense of Animals: 503-249-9996 (ext. #2)."
"Moravek Biochemicals has joined the long list of companies who have decided to sever their links with Huntingdon Life Sciences, Europe's largest contract animal testing company. Moravek's decision to terminate their contract with HLS came just weeks after their owner and vise president Paul Moravek, got his home and cars vandalized by members of the Animal Liberation Front."
"Another bit of graffiti, 'GOD bless USA,' seemed to confirm what a police spokesman said the department suspects -- that the vandalism was a retaliation against Sherman's 14-year-old daughter, Dawn, who had objected to a suggestion that the patriotic song 'God Bless America' be included in a lineup of songs to be played in the hallways of Buffalo Grove High School during this week's homecoming festivities."
Hell yes. A chapter of ADL is starting up here in Portland. Get involved, get active. Write them through the MySpace page for more info. Also, sign up to the email list for continued updates as things get rolling.
