So, it's about f'ing time, but... SweetPea Bakery is open. Kinda. From 11-3 today you can swing by and grab some coffee, a limited amount of sweets, maybe a bagel with bacon/scallion cream cheese, or biscuits and gravy. Come by with cash. Lisa needs the money.
So, our brand new $7k produce cooler is acting shitty already. Might be a good day to come stock up on produce, especially greens and stuff. Oh, and carrots, come buy those too. Make some soup. We gots parsnips!
"Today, on Christmas Eve, a fur selling Brooklyn boutique was visited by the ALF at their peak shopping hours. One activist distributed liberal amounts of Liquid Ass, a product that, when sprayed, is the noxious and overpowering stench of rotting shit."
Ok. We remember somebody, a regular customer, coming in at some point and being all "Dudes, I can TOTALLY get you all the packing peanuts you need from my work" and we were all "DUDE, that totally kicks complete ass, now we never have to search for used ones again." But now we can't remember who offered to be our peanut hook-up. Do you remember? Are you out there reading this? Holla back. Or if you're not this person and have this junk taking up space in your home, come drop it off here, we needs it.
Bummer. Blue Sky sodas are switching from evaporated cane juice to bone-char refined sugar in its non-organic sodas. So that means we're losing Dr Becker and Grape and some other great flavors. Still a few of the old batch here, and we're just going to be carrying their organic ones now.
So now you know. $.80 instead of $.65 a can. Blame them. Or God.
A few posts down you'll see the info about Buddy. Karen and her family have already shelled out a bunch of money to get him "fixed" and fed and stuff like that. We thought it'd be a nice gesture if folks could maybe help chip in a few bucks so they don't have the entire burden on them as they are not rich, just nice.
If you want, you can PayPal a wee bit of $$$ to jsurvey@verizon.net, anything would help. And if too much comes in, they'll donate the extra to Pawsitively Pitbulls, a local group that does good stuff. Just a thought, no pressure. thanks.
Hey you. Lazy animal rights sympathizer? Sleepy from eating nachos and living the easy life in Portland. Ready to get busy? A little busy? Maybe?
Well, on on Sunday, January 27th, 6-8pm, we're going to be hosting this open house/meet'n'greet kinda thing with a few local groups you might be interested in getting involved with.
The idea is that a ton of people can show up, find out what everybody is about, and get involved with whatever group seems to be a best fit for you. Sound good? Sure it does. Mark it on the calendar and please try to come and get involved. Makes life more interesting than just smoking weed and playing your new Wii you got for Christmas.
We just met Buddy (temporary name), the homeless dog that Karen's family found and is currently fostering. He's so beautiful and curious and fun loving. We ran around the store and played and he watched us work.
They tracked down his old "owner" and turns out he's a friend of some Portland Trailblazer who gives this guy pit bulls to breed out of his backyard. Buddy kept escaping, that's why his face is all banged up. So, Buddy was a backyard dog used for breeding, and once Karen told this guy she got Buddy fixed, well, he told her he didn't want him anymore, so she and her family are still trying to find him a home.
Buddy is a really really great dog. He's only about 16 months old, so he's still a puppy, but he already knows his basic commands really well. We don't think he was used for fighting because he's really great with other dogs, and also great with children. They're still not sure about cats, but his old owner said he was never around cats, and from seeing him in the store, he's very very curious, so hopefully it's just a natural curiosity to them. And since he's so young still, he is so easily trainable. The only thing is from being left in the backyard all his life, he hates being alone, so he has some separation issues, but hopefully this will get better once he feels secure.
Please, anyone out there willing to foster or adopt Buddy. He's so amazing already, and has so much potential for being the perfect family dog.

"Melbourne Aquarium officials say the Betta fish sold with the iPond need a 10 liter tank to swim and get a proper amount of oxygen, but the iPond's tank is only 650 milliliters. Acoustics experts also say sound from the speaker, which is built into the bottom of the iPond, could transfer into fish tank, bringing up another potential hazard."
"Wal-Mart says it's investigating the situation, but has given no indication of a timeframe for action. The retail giant didn't bother to comment on its website about the young workers' plight. Instead, the site boasts a story casting the store in a more favorable light: 'Local Kids Get a Wal-Mart Shopping Spree.'"
"Congress voted 372-9 on Tuesday to recognize "the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world" and acknowledges "the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.""

"It's very hypocritical of our society that only the day before yesterday Michael Vick got time in jail for abusing animals, and today we're trying to prosecute someone for saving abused animals,' Nelson-Bunge said."
"A UCSD employee who was fired from his job as a lab technician last week was arrested Saturday in connection with a bomb hoax Wednesday that targeted a research building on the La Jolla campus where he formerly worked."
Oh yeah, while we're announcing crap, our next SHAC7 benefit movie night will be a showing of Idiocracy on January 13th at The Artistery. Ow, My Balls!
So, details are getting figured out, but there's gonna be a grand opening party here on January 6th. A Sunday. SweetPea will be open by then and things will be happening in all the spaces. Some bands, some food, some grab-ass. Things will be announced as we decide upon them. Maybe we'll even have a sign up by then?
Oh hi there. So, we wanted to first say a giant thank you to the few people who came to our last SHAC7 benefit movie night and to all the folks who continue to support our little monthly movie screenings.
Okay, we hate having to guilt people out, but this is just something that's been bothering us: we wanted to say in general, the movie nights' attendance numbers lately have been pretty crappy. We've been doing this for event for a long time now, and you don't know how bummed we get knowing how many people read our posts, compared to the number of people who show up. Sure we are all busy, we all have lives, we're all tired, but we're not asking for much. Just a $3 donation to some great people and a couple hours of your time to watch a funny movie.
We pay $50 a month to rent The Artistery out, and sometimes that's comparable to how much is donated. Thanks to the people who give a little more each time. But come on folks, the same people are coming and donating.
Sorry for this guilt trip. Here's something to remind you why.
We love you. Food Fight Grocery
P.S. Please don't comment reasons why you can't or didn't come. Just try to make it out next month. Yay, go team!
"People who eat a lot of red meat and processed meats have a higher risk of several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colorectal cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday."
Now would be a great time to bring us all your paper bags you have lying around taking up space. We're running low and are on the verge of (gulp) buying new ones.
We just found another shopping cart pushing our number of found carts all the way to 2!!!! Come fill one up and pretend you're in a real grocery store.

"Andy Stepanian is losing his phone privileges for 9 months! Its going to be a long 9 months for Andy. He has requested extra letters to help him get through those months. If you haven't already please go ahead and write him (or any of his co defendants) a letter.

"In an anonymous communique received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office last night, activists claim to have visited the home of Oregon Health Sciences primate vivisector Miles Novy, infamous for deliberately infecting the uterus' of pregnant monkeys, causing them to terminate their pregnancy prematurely. 'ALF' and 'Sadist' were reportedly spray-painted on Novy's automobiles, and at least one vehicle was covered with a caustic chemical."
The Boellings, an amazing family who are our best customers, not to mention great activists, who probably do more helping the cause than you ever will, found a beautiful dog wandering the streets. He has no microchip, and they've flyered, asked vet clinics, posted everywhere, but no luck. We always say people need help when they find an animal, but the Boellings truly do. They have 13 animals they take care of already!
So anyone out there willing to adopt/foster this dog, PLEASE get in touch. Here's Karen's description of him:
"He's about 2 to 4 years old (my guess), is calm, knows commands such as sit, shake, etc., expects to sleep with my daughter at night on her bed, is good with her toddler, but seems too interested in cats. It appears he came from a family situation. We'd be willing to throw in a neuter, some shots, and maybe a kennel. Any thoughts would be appreciated."

Just got in a nice batch of Pink Lady apples. Super good. And, just for kicks, a batch of Artichokes for you to mess with. Don't make us donate these to the neighborhood soup kitchen, please.
Warning, this will break your heart. Good morning.
"Caged monkeys await their fate at a medical laboratory in Hubei Province, China. The judges liked that this image subverts the usual romanticized approach to wildlife photography and more accurately reflects the fate of many of the world’s animals. The sneaker at the top provides scale and injects a human being into the scene; the anonymity of the wearer suggests concealment and complicity. The structure of the cages, the horror of the captivity, the crowded composition, and the claustrophobic tension all add up to a sad and compelling photo. "
"Driggins, also known as Birdman, is trying to make the boxes a hot property in the parrot real-estate market. As he set up one of the wooden boxes, Driggins put a sprinkling of green and yellow feathers around the nesting area."
