Its time for us to finally start this! This Sunday, from 9am until noon or so, we will be having an all you can eat brunch buffet. $10 gets you coffee and juice and as much french toast, pancakes, potatoes, scramble, biscuits and gravy, etc etc as you can eat.
So after a call today informing us of the use of whey in Seventh Generation paper towels we have pulled the remaining stock. This was verified with the company and they said it was just the paper towels. Sorry for the problems. We will buy back any that may have out there.
Hey there quick check in. There is the protest going on tomorrow at Unger Furs. Any info you might need is further down in the blog or in the un-updated calender on the side just over to the left there.
So, see ya later. Emiko and I are heading on a vacation. 2 whole weeks away from the store. No posts for a while, probably. Hopefully. You take care now, ya hear?
"In what prosecutors called unprecedented charges, Daniel Ugarte Navarro, 49, of Pomona faces up to eight years and eight months in prison if convicted of five felony counts of animal cruelty and three misdemeanor counts of illegal movement of a non-ambulatory animal. Navarro, who was a head pen manager at Hallmark Meat Packing, was shown using forklifts, electric prods and high-pressure water hoses to force cows to their feet in the video surreptitiously shot by the Humane Society of the United States."
"An ambitious program announced today by a coalition of government agencies could lead to the end of animal testing to evaluate the safety of new chemicals and drugs.
Three agencies — the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program and the National Institutes of Health — have signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding' to begin developing the new methods. The collaboration is described in a paper in today's edition of the journal Science.
The agreement is a 'milestone' says Martin Stephens of the Humane Society of the United States. 'We believe this is the beginning of the end for animal testing. We think the (conversion) process will take about 10 years.'"
"Portland made history with the shutting down of schumacher furs but there is still much more work to be done. We must continue the fight and let others know that we will not tolerate fur stores in our city. Nicholas Ungar Furs, you are next...
We are going to be there every Saturday. Come and join us to stand up for the animals!

"Even converting existing farmland from food to biofuel crops increases greenhouse gas emissions as food production is shifted to other parts of the world, resulting in the destruction of more forests and grasslands to make way for farmland, the second study found.
The analysis calculated that a U.S. cornfield devoted to producing ethanol would have to be farmed for 167 years before it would begin to achieve a net reduction in emissions."
Buddy still needs a home. Permanent or foster. Please! He's still a puppy and coming from a less-than-ideal situation, he was never socialized, human and non-human, so he still needs to learn some manners around other animals. Any amazing person out there willing to work with Buddy and show him the love he deserves, please get in touch.
He's had a couple of missed possibilites, and he's so sweet and willing to please, so we think if this guy had some permanence, he'd progress incredibly.
"Among the standard items people might impulsively duck into a convenience store for - beef jerky, pork rinds, a quart of milk or a pint of ice cream - you'd scarcely expect to find vegan sandwiches."
Right this minute Sweetpea is unleashing some apple-cream cheese danishes into the world. Rumor is there are only 3 cherry-cream cheese danishes made, so try to beat your neighbor there.
The Briana Waters trial starts tomorrow in Tacoma. More details on the linked site and here. If you can get out there to show support, please do. If you can pitch in for legal support, please do.
"Recently, concerned citizens rescued 47 rats who were apparently part of a breeding program at Scripps 'Mercy' Hospital in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. We entered through an unlocked door and found these beautiful innocent creatures living in squalor. Eight were crammed into each tiny barren cage. Their white fur was matted in urine and feces. Their babies were to be stolen from them and tortured in useless experiments, but now they are in loving homes where they will spend the rest of their lives as individuals, rather than research tools to be discarded when no longer necessary."
"According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals rep Michael McGraw, the group sent 'a fashionably dressed young woman, clad in knee-high black boots and a denim miniskirt, to Karan's Central Park West home, with a tray of soy lattes in her hand.'"
We now carry Portland-based Veganatural's Fire to Ice Massage Balm & Beyond and their Blacksoap Hair to Feet soap. I tried the soap this morning, and it rules. Left me feeling clean and smooth. And we still have their Tattoo Balm & Beyond and Animal Balm & Beyond, too. Good stuff.
"Our stripper-happy city’s new joint is owned by Johnny Diablo, a 44-year-old Los Angeles transplant. He opened a vegan restaurant in September 2006, Pirates Tavern, in the same building that now blends strippers and soy. Pirates Tavern went out of business in December 2007, Diablo says, because most vegans live at the poverty level or below."
"In the wake of the Michael Vick case, there is an increased awareness about the cruelty and prevalence of dogfighting in the United States. In a recent ranking of state dogfighting laws, Oregon ranked 28th -- in part because of its weak penalties for spectators. Spectators are knowing participants who finance and support animal fighting, and strong penalties for being a spectator are critical.
Fortunately, bill (S.B. 1072) has been introduced in the Oregon Senate to increase penalties for being a knowing spectator at an animal fight and for possession of dogfighting training paraphernalia."
"“How do you get it done? You write it that it was fed or it was clean when it really wasn't. It was very common, common and sickening and nothing we could do about it if we wanted to keep our jobs,” Nofsinger said."
"Papa G's vegan organic deli is now open. We are open from 7 am - 7 pm Monday through Friday and from 8 am - 6 pm Saturday through Sunday. We are offering Organic breakfast, lunch and dinner. A few of our house made items include all salad dressings, cashew yogurt, cashew latte or mocha (all of our milks are house made), biscuits and gravy, coconut keifer, 4 rotating soup choices, organic salad bar, our famous vegan hot bar expanded, and various different baked goods previously available at the Daily Grind."
Hit it up yesterday, super good. Portland kinda rules, right?
"The Blossoming Lotus Cafe and Catering is hiring servers, cooks, and dishwashers to fill new positions at its Pearl and NE locations. We seek dedicated and conscientious individuals willing to promote sustainable living in all its forms. Experience required. Vegan, raw, and organic, and experience perferred."
