A friend is doing a zine on physical illness and needs submissions. Here's what his call says:
"I am currently seeking submissions for a publication - which will most likely take the form of a zine - on physical illness. This project will attempt to give voice to the experiences of people living with illness, serve as a resource for those who are diagnosed with illness, and further the dialogue around issues related to support and illness (particularly within left/ DIY/ radical/ alternative scenes). While I am principally seeking submissions from those who have experienced or are currently living with a serious physical health problem, I am also very interested in submissions from those who have indirectly experienced illness: caregivers, community members, partners, family members, etc.
The deadline for submission is December 1. Please spread the word.
Please be in touch with questions and submission ideas: benholtzman@yahoo.com"
"A police force has offered £40,000 in compensation to animal rights campaigners, including supporters of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), after they were prevented from joining a protest against livestock exports."
"The Humane Society of the United States asked for a federal investigation into price fixing and false advertising to hide cruelty on factory farms where most of the nation's eggs are produced, the animal rights group said on Wednesday."
"Three members of the Animal Liberation Front entered a massive mink prison in Kaysville, Utah last night. On releasing about 10,000 mink we found and destroyed all breeding records. We also vandalized the trucks and various forms of equipment, including destroying the electrical fence and cutting about a hundred holes in the fence's perimeter."
"A federal judge accused the U.S. Department of Agriculture of ignoring the law on government involvement in political campaigns Monday and ordered the agency not to spend any money collected from egg producers on ads against a state ballot measure that would ban cramped cages for hens and other farm animals."
Tomorrow is Veganopolis's last day in Portland. Read all about it on their MySpace blog. Sorry to see 'em go. Thanks for the sandwiches and milkshakes.
"The government said it will start considering proposals to sell genetically engineered animals as food, a move that could lead to faster-growing fish, cattle that can resist mad cow disease or perhaps heart-healthier eggs laid by a new breed of chickens."
"Four years later, Hutchings, an active school mom in southwest Portland, decided to start up a one-woman business called Eco-Luxury Fur, with the tall task of convincing Americans that buying fur -- more precisely, a brushtail possum pillow or throw -- is good for the environment."
"This Saturday, join fellow activists in the resistance against Foie Gras. The night will be a tour through the cruelty of the Pearl District, as there will be two targets. Blue Hour will be the first, then we will move our way down through the gentrification towards Fenouil, a French Bistro that has chosen to deceitfully return Foie Gras to the menu after deceiving activists earlier this year."
Hey everybody. We just got this video excerpt converted and are trying our best to get it posted everywhere. It concerns the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Portland. Please pass this around.

"'I hate them. These [expletives] deserve to be hurt. Hurt, I say!,' the employee yells as he hits a sow with a metal rod. 'Hurt! Hurt! Hurt! Hurt! ... Take out your frustrations on 'em.' He encourages the investigator to pretend that one of the pigs scared off a voluptuous and willing 17- or 18-year-old girl, and then beat the pig for it."
"The atmosphere is surprisingly relaxed, despite the fact that terrorists protesting animal research have taken a hostage in a UC Berkeley building and are threatening to shoot anyone who approaches the scene."
"Want to stick up for the billions of chickens slaughtered for KFC each year? Join local activists this Saturday in a peaceful demonstration to show KFC that abusing chickens doesn't fly. Please attend the demonstration and encourage your community to boycott KFC, which supports cruel practices like breaking birds' wings and legs, cutting their throats while the animals are still conscious, and scalding them to death in defeathering tanks:
What: Demonstration outside KFC Where: KFC, 5721 N.E. Martin Luther King Blvd., Portland When: Saturday, September 20, 12-1 p.m.
If you have any questions or would like to RSVP for the demonstration, please contact Amanda at finzyford@yahoo.com."
Our next movie night is gonna be on my birthday, October 12th. So you'll REALLY need to come. And instead of bringing me tons of presents, just bring some extra donation money that will go to our good friend Josh Harper's commissary fund. Save that date! xoxo Chad
"Pacelle writes as if the actions of HSUS exist in a political vacuum, and completely ignores the larger political climate. It’s bad enough that some groups are remaining silent about all of this “eco-terrorism” rhetoric, but for the largest animal protection organization in the country to come out and support it… that’s another story entirely. It lets law enforcement know that their actions can proceed unchecked and unquestioned by the few groups in the country who are actually paying attention."
Thanks for coming out to the movie night last night. Here's what Kit had to say:
"We got $180.73! Thanks so much for doing this for us. We still owed the vet $182 from the last visit so I can pay that off and be ready for the next vet visit this coming Saturday. It never ends. Oh well."
See, even a fun little night like last night can really help folks out. We hope you'll keep coming to the movies each month, and maybe bring new folks. Even if you don't really want to see whatever crap we decide to show, come anyway. Thanks kids.
PS. Get in touch with Out To Pasture or... anybody, and get involved and lend a hand.
We got in a new stock of Beauty Without Cruelty black and brown mascara, black and brown pencil eyeliner, and pressed powders (because no one likes a dirty ol' shiny, oily, NATURAL face).
"Late on September 10 we entered the compound of Worldwide Primates (16450 SW 180th Street, Miami, Florida) and cut large holes in 4 outdoor cages. Each cage held 5 or 6 monkeys.
There is no doubt that monkeys can survive in Florida. There are hundreds of wild monkeys in colonies across the state. Worldwide Primates is surrounded by fruit farms.
Worldwide Primates is the business of convicted baby orangutan smuggler Matthew Block. He spent one year in prison and then went back to work importing and selling primates to vivisection labs.
Mr. Block, we haven't forgotten you. Your work is still criminal in our eyes.

"On Wednesday , Sept. 10, the Congressional House Judiciary Committee will vote on H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act. This federal bill will stop the slaughter of American horses, a cruel practice that continues in Mexico and Canada. Wednesday’s vote on H.R. 6598 is crucial and means the difference between life and a brutal death for countless horses. The committee desperately needs to hear from you, as many of its members are on the fence and have never considered this issue before. Your comments are critical."
"Around 8pm on Monday, Sept. 08, Blue Hour received a foul alert of protest when an autonomous group entered into the restaurant and 16 stink bombs were set off inside, right next to the kitchen. This action was taken during dinner hours in order to disrupt business because this restaurant refuses to take the cruel and grotesque foie gras off of their menu. "
"On Sunday, September 7, Jonathan Nicholas of The Oregonian newspaper wrote a great editorial entitled "The Elephant In The Room," about the Oregon Zoo and, more specifically, the elephants.
Taxpayers in the Portland Metro Region will be asked in November to vote on a costly zoo bond measure that would expend millions for an expansion of the elephant exhibit at the Oregon Zoo, but not make a meaningful difference for the elephants. An important point is that the zoo continues to embrace the "free contact" method of training and managing elephants, i.e., use of the cruel bullhook.

Links to a ton on thoughts on the vivisection issue. Read up and ponder and (I know we seem to be harping on this) think about what could possibly be done to have some affect on the primate vivisection lab right here in Portland. Any bright ideas, please email us, we'd love to hear 'em.
"Mike D, a prominent Portland activist (AR, Human Rights, Earth, Labor) was arrested at the Anti-Foie Gras demonstration Saturday night. Police say that he was arrested for using a tiny 99-cent plastic toy cone while chanting."
Attention to all you lazy bums out there. We're gonna be helping the severely understaffed IDA table on Saturday at the Belmont Street Fair. Booth #50, roughly at 34th and Belmont we think.
Wanna help? Come by to relieve somebody. Maybe for an hour? Basically handing out free jerky and cookies and maybe answering a question or two. Easy. Fun. Please come help out.
"What: Foie Gras Demo @ Blue Hour When: Saturday, September 6th 6:30 pm Where: @ NW 10th and Davis (by Blossoming Lotus), then to Blue Hour @ NW 13 and Everett at 7PM Why: Ducks and Geese have no voice.."
"Now, in the wake of the police riots in St Paul, seems to be an especially apt moment for my report on the “History of Activist Repression” panel at AR2008, on which I appeared along with Heidi Boghosian and Will Potter. Here it is…"
"According to the researchers, how we feel about a sausage, regardless of whether it's soy-based or beef, says more about our personal values than about what the sausage actually tastes like. In fact, most people can't even tell the difference between an ersatz vegan sausage and the real thing. "
A good overview of how crazy things have been surrounding the RNC and a reminder (in case you've forgotten) about how completely out of hand our government has gotten.
"News continues to come out of the Twin Cities and the Republican National Convention of what I can only describe as a police state showing its true colors. If you read this site regularly, you know I stay far away from language and descriptions like that, because I think it’s best to let the stories speak for themselves. But I’m at a loss of how else to describe this. Here as some of the highlights that the mainstream press has overwhelmingly ignored:"
"A diet with meat is responsible for producing in a year the same amount of greenhouse gases as driving a mid-sized car 4,758 kilometres (2,956 miles), the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IOeW) said.
But the food a vegetarian consumes in 12 months is responsible for generating the same emissions as driving 2,427 kilometres, the IOeW said in a study commissioned by independent consumer protection group Foodwatch.
The calculations are based on emissions of greenhouse gases, including methane produced by the animals themselves, as well as emissions from food production including manufacturing feed and fertiliser and the use of farmland.
Going vegan -- giving up meat and dairy products -- would cut the emissions released in making what you eat more than seven-fold, to the equivalent of driving 629 kilometres, it said."
