"A vegetarian Wall Streeter has a real beef with his macho man ex-boss, who he says tormented him for being a "homo" who wouldn't eat steak with the boys."

"Please help IDA end the sale of fur at Nordstrom and join us every Sunday in Downtown Portland for our education outreach!
Nordstrom is a fourth generation family business that has a solid customer service reputation, and a name that evokes a sense of responsibility and success. Why then does the Nordstrom Family continue to sully its reputation with ties to the fur industry?
Every year over 50 million wild animals are killed for fur. An animal suffers and dies for fur - whether it's trim, full length or accessory. Help Nordstrom make the right choice by speaking up when shopping at Nordstrom. Please politely tell their associates: "Fur just doesn’t belong here. Please stop selling fur."
Nordstrom has made some positive steps in the right direction, getting rid of their fur salons and taking fur off their private line, now it’s time for Nordstrom to stop selling all fur!
WHAT: Anti-Fur Leafleting at Nordstrom

"Dicentra Collective presents a rarely shown and controversial documentary "Titicut Follies" by filmmaker Frederick Wiseman as part of our creating radical communities of care events series. Prefaced with an introduction to the film and followed by a facilitated discussion, we will explore issues such as physical and mental health, confinement, and care.
Thursday, January 29th 2009 6pm at the Red & Black Cafe 400 SE 12th Avenue at Oak www.redandblackcafe.com
"Titicut Follies" (1967, 84 Minutes, Black & White) is a documentary film about the treatment of inmates and patients at Bridgewater State Hospital for the "criminally insane", a Massachusetts Correctional Institution. The film was banned until 1992, being one of the only in U.S. history to be so for reasons other then pornography. Event participants should note that the film is quite disturbing and at times difficult to watch, as the patients are treated in a horrendous fashion. Dicentra feels that the film provides valuable insight into how those experiencing different realities and mental states are treated in our society.
$1-5 suggested donation for the cause and no one turned away for lack of funds, and of course amazing vegan food and drink via the café!"
" I have never hit or attacked anyone. Even the judge said I was not accused of actually intimidating anyone. It was just this amazing charge they came up with, "conspiracy to blackmail," that was some kind of catch-all.
Our Government is big on allowing people the democratic right to protest but when you become effective at protesting they clamp down on you like the worst form of dictatorship. We formed SHAC because we were genuinely heartbroken that trusting animals were being bred to be led into laboratories to have all sorts of unspeakable things done to them. We had no trouble raising money because millions of people out there are horrified at what goes on in animal testing but it was extremists, not us, who carried out attacks on people?s homes. We went out of our way to ensure our campaign was above board and legal but they found a way to bring us down.
When I get out I plan to establish an animal sanctuary, maybe helping animals who have been tested on. The Government has me targeted so I want to help in any effective way I can. I find it incredible that as someone exercising a right to protest against cruelty I land up in jail next to people who have killed and tortured children.
I am working as a listener helping vulnerable prisoners while in jail and making the best of it. My legal team is currently considering an appeal."

"The United States is initiating a closed-door negotiation that could open up new areas to whale hunting for the first time in decades, part of an attempt to end a long-standing impasse over whaling limits with Japan, the world's most avid whaling nation."
"My father is a despicable man. My father is a sort of human molestor. An exploiter. A scoundrel. A world historical motherfucking son of a bitch. (sorry grandma) …"
"I asked some animal protection groups around the world how they intend to campaign against Canada’s seal slaughter this year, and I’ll wrap this up with five things you can do to help."
Ok, for some reason, maybe today's "Internet Activism" talk made us decide to try out a Twitter account. "Follow" us if you wish, mostly we'll use it to shoot out little reminders and such. Probably not too exciting, but ya neva know...
Hey ya'll. So we got a bunch of great looking avocados (avocadoes?) here for your pleasure. Come on in and get two for $1.50, or just one for 89 cents. Such a deal. Also have some great looking tomatoes and, as always, a bunch of Grand Central bread. Sounds like one banging sandwich to me. Put some olive oil on that thing. Oh man.
"An avocado sale is the last true revolutionary act." -Emma Goldman
"Seven animal rights activists in the U.K. were sentenced to up to 11 years in prison Wednesday for “conspiracy to blackmail” in their campaign to shut down the notorious animal testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences."
Just wanted to let everyone know we read up on the peanut butter recall, and the products on our shelves that have peanut butter are cool. We had to get rid of a box of Peanut Butter Crunch Clif bars and Nutz over Chocolate Luna bars that were in the date range listed as part of the recall, so if you've bought those recently, look at the FDA site and see if their expirations fall in the dates listed. Luckily the most of the products we sell don't use tainted overseas peanut butter. Guess Clif bars use the crappy stuff.
A customer of ours asked that we post this, and we shall:
"I was wondering if you'd be willing to post a couple of events on your calendar. They're broader than just vegan, but they include veganism and animal protection as part of a larger focus on social change. I would be really grateful if you'd post them. (I may drop by begging to put up a flyer in a few days, too :)
Zoe Weil, who's the president of the Institute for Humane Education (http://www.humaneeducation.org), the organization I work for, is coming to Portland to speak at Powell's-Hawthorne, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 7:30 pm, on Wednesday February 4. She's promoting her new book: Most Good, Least Harm: A Simple Principle for a Better World and Meaningful Life. In her book she includes information about animal protection and making choices that don't cause harm to animals, so I think that FF fans would be interested in the event.
Also, she's leading a MOGO (Most Good) Workshop on Saturday, February 7, from 8:30 am - 5 pm at Cascadia Commons (my co-housing community common house), 4377 SW 94th Avenue. Here are some tidbits about it:
MOGO Workshop Saturday, February 7, 8:30 am - 5 pm Cascadia Commons (4377 SW 94th Avenue) Creating a humane and sustainable world is not easy. But when you live a life that deeply embodies your values, not only do you help improve the world, you also cultivate your own inner peace and joy. "There will be histories written about the Bush administration. They’ll be privy to information we don’t have yet, because the future is like that. On the other hand, we have our own privileged knowledge: We know how the story looked like to people who didn’t know how it was going to come out.
Now, in this moment before a changing world overwrites our memories of the era, let us pause to salute our constant companion of those years: The Onion. Other histories of the Bush years will doubtless be more factual, but none will ever be truer."
"Local vegetarian nonprofit Northwest VEG is seeking contestants for our first annual Vegan Valentines Bake-off Contest, which will be held on Sunday, February 15, following our regular monthly potluck dinner. Entries will be sampled and judged by a small panel of professional chefs, plus members of the public. Prizes in four categories will be awarded.
For more information, visit www.nwveg.org/Calendar.html and scroll down to the February 15 event description. Please write to volunteer@nwveg.org if you would like to compete."
"I am a Ph.D student at The University of Texas at Austin studying how vegetarians talk about being a vegetarian. Little research exists on this topic, and, as you are a vegetarian, I am very much hoping to get your insight and the insight of any vegetarians you know (e.g., friends, members, customers, volunteers, family, etc.). When you get a chance, will you please click on http://texascommunication.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_bvyubavkEj7c73e&SVID=Prod and participate in this short survey?
If you would forward this email to your friends, post the link on your website or blog, or include it in the next issue of your enewsletter, that would be amazing!! I am trying to capture the experiences of as many vegetarians across the country as possible by February 1, 2009. At least 250 vegetarians are needed for this study. For the purposes of this study, a vegetarian refers to someone who doesn't eat meat, but eats dairy and/or eggs, someone who is vegan, and someone who is pescatarian.
Please contact me at lynseykromo@mail.utexas.edu or 512-299-6231 with any questions, for additional information, or to receive a copy of the survey results.
Thank you so much in advance!

"Erin Williams, co-author of “Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection,” will be signing copies of her book and giving a presentation called “Why Farm Animals Matter.” Her talk will address the importance of making humane, sustainable food choices, as well as provide information on some of the exciting recent advancements for farm animals in the United States. "The nation's landscape is changing before our eyes. Record numbers of people are preparing to dig up their manicured lawns and privet hedges. Even the most modish gardens are sporting freshly dug vegetable beds, sapling fruit trees and nascent compost heaps."
"We have a commercial kitchen space [800sq ft?] that we are looking to sublease to the right bizz. We are a vegan business and would love to find a vegetarian/vegan business {baker etc} to share our space. We are flexible with the times of usage and are generally in there 4 times a week right now. We are the only tenant right now and would like to find the perfect fit. You can call me at 503.334.5361 to view the space. There are two ovens, a flat top, walk in cooler, grill, and other odds and ends.
"The fellow in question is Harvard professor Cass R. Sunstein, tagged by Obama to be administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, which is part of the White House Office of Management and Budget. A quick Google turned up a paper he published in 2002 titled The Rights of Animals: A Very Short Primer."
"Jonathan Paul and Josh Harper's birthday is January 31st and Jake Conroy's birthday is February 3rd. Now would be a great time to get out a pen and some paper (or a card) and show your support. "
Announcing our next benefit movie night. "Another State of Mind" from 1984. THE documentary about 80's punk rock. If you haven't seen this, you're missing out on some important American history lessons. If you have seen it, you'll need to see it again, it's been too long. Plus, the $5 entrance fee will include a bowl of chili. And your money will go to help support Out to Pasture Farm Sanctuary in Estacada. Pretty great, right?

"he state of Alaska today formally notified the federal government of its intent to sue to overturn recent protections given to the critically endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale under the Endangered Species Act. In October 2008 the Cook Inlet beluga whale was listed as endangered by the federal National Marine Fisheries Service over the objections of Governor Sarah Palin. The listing occurred following petitions and litigation by the Center for Biological Diversity and other organizations."

Communication has never been easier than it is right now. The Internet has made it possible to research, collect, and spread information to millions of people at little to no cost to activists and groups. Utilizing these new tools can be a very effective way to advocate for animal issues as well as other social justice issues.
Topics covered in this presentation will include making a website, using social networking sites, e-newsletters, and other relevant online tools. If you already use these tools in your activism, please join us and share your knowledge with others.
Our guest speaker will be Glenn Gaetz. Glenn heads up Liberation B.C. (http://liberationbc.org/) Glenn has been involved as an activist ever since he moved to Vancouver, about 4 years ago. He has participated in numerous protests, leafleting, and other outreach activities. His day job involves graphic design and web development for non-profit clients, and he uses the skills he’s learned there to provide Liberation BC with an inexpensive and easy-to manage website, as well as the ability to send out html emails to their mailing list. He is very interested in providing non-profits and activists with low-cost or free tools to aid in their efforts to make the world a better place.
Join us to learn, share, and grow as activists. Thank you.
Holy crap, we've been waiting and waiting for this. We've seen the menu for this and it looks nuts. Unlike anything we've ever seen in NYC, LA, or anywhere else.
Homemade gnocchi, pumpkin ravioli, "priest choker" pasta, Saltimboca... everything looks so good. See you there.

Fresh bread comes in every day, around 11ish. But we can only sell it for the same day. It's an experiment. We want to be as "one stop shopping" as possible, but folks have to buy it for us to be able to keep it up. So... want some bread?
"When the animal rights group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) posted news of both legal and illegal conduct on its website, and publicly supported a variety of tactics in the movement to shut down the notorious animal testing lab Huntingdon Life Sciences, they were acting as “generals” in a campaign of “terrorism,” the U.S. government argued before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals last Tuesday."
Thanks to everybody who showed up and hopefully had some fun during this weeks Let Live Foundation benefits. Thanks especially to the East Coasters who flew in to help out, you guys rule, and it’s been nice hanging out. Almost heart-warming, but not quite. More like stomach upsetting, but I digress. If anybody couldn’t make it, but want to chip in, you can always drop off donations at Food Fight or Herbivore. Just tell the cashier that it’s for Let Live and it’ll be put aside. Hopefully soon, we can even give larger donations a receipt so it’ll be tax-deductible. Fingers crossed.
"In 2008, there appeared to be an increase in well-funded animal rights activities directed at animal agriculture, according to the Animal Agriculture Alliance research.
In 2007, the latest reporting period available for review, charitable donations to animal rights groups rose 11% providing activist groups funds to develop activities such as California’s Proposition 2, undercover video operations, legislative initiatives and legal actions. Donations to the extremist People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and its subsidiaries increased 11%."

"Just a plug that this film will also be shown at Pacific University next Monday 1/12 at 7pm. I know it's out in the boondocks but there are plenty of westsiders besides myself that might be interested. Please pass the word along. Thanks much!"
So, we're gonna give it a shot. Every day we should be getting fresh bread delivered from Grand Central Baking Company. Sour dough, Como loafs, and baguettes. But, we HAVE to sell them the same day, so, if you like eating good bread, please buy some with us instead of Fred Meyer or wherever else you shop. First delivery is on Saturday.
"The fact is animal research doesn't carry over well to humans. For example, the arthritis drug Vioxx tested safe and even beneficial to the heart in animal tests but was pulled from the market after causing an estimated 320,000 cases of heart attacks and strokes in humans. And sometimes it goes the other way. For example, penicillin was discovered in 1929 but wasn't used until 1939 because its failure to cure infected rabbits had convinced researchers it was worthless. There are hundreds of similar examples."
In case you've been waiting, tomorrow (wednesday), Los Gorditos 2 will have soup! And they're also going to have fideo! If you don't know what that is, google it. You should go there anyway and get a great bite to eat. Love them.
Slingshot Dakota needs one for their show Sunday, and the going rate around town is $100! We'd rather pay someone we know that money, or hopefully less, so if you have one of these mothers-of-a-keyboard, please get in touch: chad@foodfightgrocery.com.

The screening will be Wednesday, January 7 at Sweetpea (next door to Herbivore) 7:30 PM Come by and meet the filmmakers!"
Hey all. So we're yet again in desperate need of packing materials, and since it pisses of the earth when we buy new stuff, we were hoping that you might have some second hand stuff sitting around. If you bring some in for us, we'll give you a can of soda. Mmm, doesn't a can of soda sound good?
