"On Wednesday London's Barbican centre was forced to delay a screening of the film after Smithfield's lawyers wrote a letter saying that the film was defamatory and included untrue claims. The show went ahead when the filmmaker, Tracy Worcester, signed an indemnity taking personal responsibility for its content."
"The case of the AETA 4 is the first application of this dangerous, Sedition Act like law. It is clear that the law can and will be used both to criminalize lawful protests and to overcharge pretty offenses. It is of critical importance that the case against the AETA 4 be dropped in order to protect our Constitutional right to dissent. Write your senator and representative and demand that they repeal the AETA which will only lead to violations of our Constitutional rights."
Thanks
Thanks to everybody who took part in today's Let Live event. Speakers and audience alike. Great content, great turnout. Rah rah rah.

""After learning that foie gras is always produced by force feeding ducks or geese to enlarge their livers to over 10 times their normal size, Costco decided it would be irresponsible to continue supporting this cruelty," states Lisa Osborne, APRL campaigns representative. "With a majority of their sales being in California, and state law banning the sale of this product in a few years, they decided to get ahead of the curve.""

"Try Vegan PDX is working on this year's guidebook and we have decided to expand it to trade paperback and sell it nationally as well as locally. The book can be used as guide to going vegan, but more than that it can be used as vegan vacation, or moving guide to portland. Similar to the zinesters guide to Portland. We will be adding lots of content that will represent veganism and our vegan community in Portland. One way we could use help from everyone in town is with vegan testimonials.
A short paragraph about how you benefit from being vegan.
Name (last name optional)
Neighborhood
Testimonial:
How long you have been vegan:
E-mail them to Info@tryveganpdx.com (feel free to send a photo, but that is optional)"
New craps.
Hey, if you are interested, we just got in some Sweet and Sara Marshmallow Bark, Isa Moskowitz's new "Vegan Brunch" book, and the new one from Colleen Patrick Goodreau "The Vegan Table". Also, Clearly Natural soap... but whatever. That's not really exciting, is it?
""The word 'eat' is legally permissible only in reference to substances appropriate for human consumption. Any implication that a consumer could or should 'enjoy' a KFC Crispy Strip fails to meet these standards, and presents an unlawful deception to consumers.""

"Meet at 9:30 AM at Seattle's Best Coffee, 1742 SW 6th, right near PSU.
We will be car pooling to a neighborhood west of downtown afterward to distribute door hangers informing residents of the wasteful practices of OHSU animal researchers. This is a fun, non-confrontational way of getting exercise!"
Give if you can spare it.
"On March 23 2009, Chuck did not make it to work at the Sanctuary due to a severe migraine. Later that night, Jen noticed that his speech was becoming slurred and he seemed disoriented, so she immediately drove him to the hospital. As the medical staff examined him, Chuck went into cardiac arrest. Though they were able to stabilize him temporarily, they soon discovered a grapefruit-sized tumor in his brain that was swelling rapidly. He needed to be flown by emergency helicopter for immediate surgery to relieve the pressure. Though he survived the operation, the threat to Chuck’s life is far from over."

3930 SE Division
Richmond Clinic
OHSU Family Medicine
In solidarity with the countless millions of animals who continue to
suffer in laboratories throughout the world, there will be a demonstration
and outreach event at the OHSU clinic at SE 39th and Division.
Meet at 12:00 (noon) on Saturday (5-30-09) at the sidewalk outside the
clinic. We will have signs and literature available to educate visitors to
the clinic, as well as traffic on Division.
Please come out to support ending the cruel, wasteful, and unscientific
practice of vivisection.
OHSU performs these experiments on thousands of animals. Dogs, cats, mice,
sheep, birds, primates and other animals all suffer an unnatural life and
death in confinement behind the walls of OHSU.

"I have been wanting to expand my tattoo coverage for a while now so I started looking around at vegan themed tattoos. I have been vegan for more about 15 years so i figured i can go ahead and get a vegan tattoo right? Its cool, all the kids are doing it, so why not just go and get a lovely tattoo at a local shop. Well its not quite that easy because a whole lot of tattoo inks out there have animal bits in them. yuck.
I will be posting here about my adventures and new tattoos as they hit my skin. I’ll also be finding vegan tattoo artists, vegan inks, vegan tattoos, and awesome vegan people with tattoos. Anyone that wants to share tattoos or tattoo art, information about vegan inks, vegan tattoo shops and vegan tattoo artists please get in touch by hitting the contact link or emailing vegantattoos@gmail.com."

"Last year, toxic plastic struck close to home. In April 2008, the FDA deemed Nalgene water bottles—those awesome, never-break, never-leak containers you had come to depend on—as unsafe for use, due to dangerous levels of toxicity in the plastic. Durability, in other words, came at a higher price than ten bucks."
"Barnes said the company is also developing a line of fish tanks that will incorporate Transitions-brand automatic tinting technology, which will eliminate glare when looking at fish outside on sunny days."
"Despite these slight changes, a majority of Americans continue to view divorce, gambling, and embryonic stem-cell research as morally acceptable, and acceptance of using animal fur for clothing has only strengthened. The death penalty, premarital sex, and medical testing on animals also meet with Americans' approval, ethically."
The Let Live Series Presents Sanctuary Stories: Tales of Hope
Portland, OR, May 31, 2009— This year, nearly two thousand chimpanzees will be used for testing in laboratories across the United States. Thousands of animals will be left to starve on foreclosed farms and hundreds of malnourished horses will be abandoned on public lands because the cost of their care is too high. These are just a few examples of the types of abuse and neglect that animals face each day. Although many of these animals will never know kindness, affection or proper nutrition- for those who find their way to a sanctuary, there is hope. This talk highlights the inspiring stories of three Northwest no-kill sanctuaries that provide lifetime quality of life to abused, abandoned and neglected animals.
Diana Goodrich, Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW): Founded in 2003, CSNW is home to the “Cle Ellum Seven,” a group of seven chimpanzees released from biomedical research. Through education and collaboration, CSNW advocates on behalf of great apes in hopes of one day eliminating their exploitation for entertainment and biomedical research.
Wayne Geiger, Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary: Started as an unofficial sanctuary in 1998, Lighthouse is currently home to two hundred farm animals who have suffered abuse and neglect. Lighthouse has helped provide homes for pigs displaced by the Iowa floods and works closely with the Humane Society of the United States to help abandoned and neglected horses.
John Collins, Out to Pasture (OTP): OTP provides permanent housing to abused, neglected and abandoned large farm animals, pigs, chickens, rabbits and dogs. OTP also does special work with miniature pigs and provides them with no-charge vet care. In addition to their sanctuary work, OTP also maintains feeding stations for feral cats and provides loaner traps and transportation so they can be spayed or neutered.
The Sanctuary Stories: Tales of Hope presentation will be held on May 31, 2009, at 2p.m. at Portland State University in Room 238 of the Smith Memorial Union Building. Admission is free. The Let Live Series is a monthly series of speakers, workshops and social events dedicated to promoting animal rights activism and education in Portland, Oregon. Sponsored by the Let Live Foundation, Vegans for Animal Advocacy, Food Fight Grocery and Herbivore Magazine.

"This week Massachusetts General Hospital killed live sheep in a trauma training course, despite the fact that more than 90 percent of such courses in the nation rely exclusively on human-based simulators rather than live animals. Continuing to use sheep in this way is both outmoded and cruel. "

"At least two more sea lions have been murdered on the Columbia. One of them was trapped more than 140 miles from Bonneville dam, on the Oregon coast, in Astoria. We do not have details on which animals have been killed, as the ODFW chose not to inform the public of the killings until this afternoon -- yet again waiting until Friday afternoon just as they were on their way out of the office for the evening before informing the people who pay their salaries that they have killed again."

"This week the governor of Maine signed into law a bill that will protect farm animals by banning veal crates and gestation crates! The bill’s passage makes Maine the sixth state in the nation to prohibit certain types of extreme confinement of farm animals. Last fall, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 2, a ballot initiative that also eliminates veal crates and gestation crates as well as battery cages for egg-laying hens in the state. Farm Sanctuary was a main backer of this landmark legislation, as well as similar successful anti-confinement initiatives in Florida and Arizona. In addition, Oregon and Colorado have passed laws prohibiting certain cruel factory farming confinement practices. "

Congrats to Proper Eats for making it to their 3 year anniversary. It's tough out there in this mean old world. Go eat their food.
"On Wednesday May 13th, we at Proper Eats will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary. We will be celebrating with a special dinner menu, featuring fresh, local and seasonal produce. We will also serve limited offerings from our regular menu. No reservations needed. Our newest employee, Meghan will be performing for the first time at Proper Eats. We do hope that you can make it out and join us on this special evening.
Reaching our third anniversary in no small feat. It has been a lot of work, but is so worth it. We could not have done it without all our friends, families, customers and of course the farms and other local food artisans. We at Proper Eats are very proud of our accomplishments and look forward to the coming year. Again, much thanks to each and every one of you!"

"Evidence uncovered by the British animal rights group Uncaged shows that P&G force-fed butylparaben - a preservative used for decades in personal care products - to pregnant rats to see if it harms their developing offspring.
The experiment killed 1,300 animals (100 pregnant mothers and their 1,200 newborns) subjecting the mothers to stressful force-feeding for approximately three weeks, after which they were killed in carbon dioxide gas chambers. Experimenters then removed the slowly dying babies from their mothers’ bodies and killed them."
