"Not all vegans are soft spoken hippie-types. Brooklyn-native Isa Chandra Moskowitz is here to prove it. The sassy vegan chef started her cooking career at the young age of 16 and is now the mastermind behind mouthwatering Post Punk Kitchen, a public access vegan cooking show, blog, recipe database and the author of a whole host of tasty cookbooks including Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Cupcakes Take over the World, Vegan Brunch as well as the upcoming Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar."

"Bolivia has enacted what animal rights defenders are calling the world's first law that prohibits the use of animals in circuses.
A handful of other countries have banned the use of wild animals in circuses, but the Bolivian ban includes domestic animals as well.
The law, which states that the use of animals in circuses "constitutes an act of cruelty," took effect on July 1 and operators have a year to comply, according to the bill's sponsor, Rep. Ximena Flores."
"He recruits champion free-divers to plant underwater microphones. A friend at Industrial Light & Magic builds fake rocks to conceal high-def cameras. The film crew even launches a remote-controlled blimp — named Cathy, an homage to one of those five original Flippers — to snag aerial footage.
Psihoyos (left, with crew members Joe Chisholmand Charles Hambleton) used state-of-the-art equipment and a commando-style shoot to capture the fishermen at work. Psihoyos describes his troops as a kind of Ocean's 11 team, and that's apt enough: He's making a real-life action caper, a heist with potential consequences in the real world. The buildup to getting the shots they want has a good deal of natural tension. And the payoff — well, let's just say it's devastating."
"Two activists have been (il)legally restrained from continuing to attend the demonstrations outside of Ungar Fur's ( SW 12th and Yamhill ). The restraining order says nothing about the activists protesting a fur shop of any kind. The owner Horst Grimm ( 74 yrs old ) got the restraining order under the 'RESTRAINING ORDER TO PREVENT ABUSE ( Elderly Persons and Persons With Disabilities Abuse Protection Act ).
This is a cheap and low blow to the first amendment rights of the activists free speech. The fur shop and portland police bureau are desperately trying to stifle the dedication and consistency of this campaign against portlands last fur shop. a number of lawyers gladly took this case for free and we are happy to accounce that the appeals to the restraining order are getting filed today. this means that the fur shop is going to have to fight harder to stop the activists from telling the people of portland about the horrors of the fur industry. but this also means that the campaign is in MAJOR need of some help due to these two activists taking a mandatory breather from the demonstrations.
PLEASE show up anyday you can. the demonstrations are going on every single day the fur shop is open. monday through friday 1 pm to 5pm. bring food, bring friends. any literature always helps. signs and some literature will be provided at the shop. UNGAR FURS SW 12th and Yamhill. WE WILL NEVER BACK DOWN. UNTIL THEY STOP THE KILLING."

"It was supposed to be a "bloodless bullfight," a dangerous dance between a pirouetting matador and an enraged bull that would not end in death. But this time-honored Portuguese tradition capping a religious festival was anything but bloodless.
As the matador raised a short festooned spear to stick to the bull's neck, an animal welfare investigator charged into the ring, suspecting that the banderilla's Velcro tip concealed an illegal steel barb that would pierce the animal's hide. Spectators chased down the intruder, and a bloody melee ensued, sending a San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputy to the hospital and two men to jail."
"Last May, farmers, slaughterhouse managers, policymakers, veterinarians, restaurant owners and other links in the animal-based food chain met in Arlington, Virginia, for the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s annual Stakeholders Summit. Not surprisingly, in the wake of Prop 2 and other successful campaigns on behalf of animals, the theme of this year’s summit was “Politics, Activism and Religion: Influencing the Debate on Animal Welfare in America.”"
"The visceral reaction against anyone questioning our God-given right to bathe in bacon has been enough to scare many in the environmental movement away from this issue. The National Resources Defense Council has a long page of suggestions for how you, too, can "fight global warming." As you'd expect, "Drive Less" is in bold letters. There's also an endorsement for "high-mileage cars such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids." They advise that you weatherize your home, upgrade to more efficient appliances and even buy carbon offsets. The word "meat" is nowhere to be found.
That's not an oversight. Telling people to give up burgers doesn't poll well."

"ELP has just learnt that former remand prisoner Williams 'BJ' Viehl (who is accused of animal rights activity) had his bail revoked three weeks ago after he wrote letters of support to other ALF/ELF prisoners which was a violation of his terms of bail (his bail terms said he wasn't allowed contact with anyone from the ALF or who is 'straight edge').
ELP further understands that BJ's co-defendant, Alex Hall, has also had his bail revoked for a separate incident. (The police stopped Alex's car, searched it and allegedly found some brass knuckles).
At the moment ELP does not have Alex's full details, but BJ's address is:
William James Viehl Inmate #2009-05735 Davis County Jail 800 West State St. Farmington, UT 84025 USA "
"During the night of May 11-12 we liberated 40 hens from battery cages. In this small barn in every cage there were three or four chickens piled on each other. Some chickens where totally bald on their neck. They struggled to get more air and space.
After a year of laying eggs, the chickens will be killed because they don't make enough money anymore for the farmer. But those chickens who we have liberated shall live for years in freedom. We have filmed the condition of the chickens in this farm. Next to this barn there was another barn with "broiler" chickens. These chickens raised for meat were all bald and couldn't stand up on their legs anymore. It was difficult to leave so many animals behind at such a disgusting place.
We will continue until all animals, human and non-human, can live in freedom.
Feel like we haven't asked for help in a while for a dog, but unfortunately we are now. Is there anyone out there willing to take in a beautiful, young pit bull in a currently terrible situation? Please email us at info@foodfightgrocery.com.
We need YOU to come & spread the word about OHSU's lies, waste, and cruelty!
In order to inform fair-goers that not everything about OHSU is all peachy, we will be holding signs and handing out literature about OHSU's cruel and wasteful vivisection programs.
Meet at 10:30 AM on Saturday (7-25-09) at the sidewalk outside the clinic. We will have signs and literature available to educate visitors to the clinic, as well as traffic on Division.
Please come out to support ending the cruel, wasteful, and unscientific practice of vivisection.
OHSU performs these experiments on thousands of animals. Dogs, cats, mice, sheep, birds, primates and other animals all suffer an unnatural life and death in confinement behind the walls of OHSU.
For more information on OHSU's animal testing, please see: ohsukillsprimates.com and ohsucruelty.com"

"The good news brings with it the bad: Jordan has now been formally indicted for criminal contempt, a charge which brings with it no maximum sentence. He has been released on bail, with the conditions that he not associate with the "Animal Liberation Front" and anyone "straight edge". Translated, this means Jordan can have no contact with people the identity of whom no one knows, and anyone who does not drink or use drugs. This is identical in language and absurdity to the bail conditions of BJ & Alex, indicted in Utah for alleged participation in A.L.F.-claimed mink releases. "
"Prosecutors alledge BJ violated bail conditions (which call for no contact with anyone in the Animal Liberation Front or straight edge) by corresponding with animal and earth liberation prisoners. The judge also took objection to shirts made to raise funds for BJ and his Co-defendant Alex Hall (view / buy the shirt here). Prosecuters asserted the shirts "mocked" the court and the defendant's bail conditions. "

"Winner of the Audience Award at both the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and 2009 Hot Docs festival, The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat. The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. It's critical that we get the word out?everywhere. We believe that once the Japanese people know, they will demand change."
Please see this movie. Learn about what is going on and what you can do about it. The movie web site is an excellent source of information on the issue, the film makers, and the public's reaction to the film thus far. The Cove will be playing on August 7th at the Fox Tower 10 .
"But now, a growing number of manufacturers are launching stylish shoes marketed as vegan and animal-friendly for women who don’t want any animal products in their footwear. And thanks to advances in synthetic materials such as faux leather and faux suede over the past decade, they look more fashionable and feel relatively comfortable."
Solo, or with a group, time-tested tools can be crucial for any activist to be effective. This talk will cover some of those proven tools and how to apply them in an organized and efficient manner, including leafleting, feed-ins, reaching out to restaurants, letters to the ed, etc. This talk will also include a basic overview of Internet based activist opportunities.
"Oftentimes, a well-written letter to the editor can reach hundreds or even thousands of newspaper readers. Because of this, COK uses the opinion sections of local papers to get the message of compassion out to a large number of people with little time spent on the effort."
"I've been putting this together for the upcoming Try Vegan PDX guidebook, which you should check out when it's published! It's going to be a fantastic resource of vegan information. On this list, I've included the business name, location (or approximate location!) and a recommended dish that's either my pick, or the dish I've heard the Portland Vegan Public talking about."
And the designs you'd never actually buy keep right on coming! This cash cow of a shirt features a diagram of a "Vegan Warrior Sword", including diagram Part E, which simply says "Liberate." What the hell are we thinking? Printed on a "new silver" color American Apparel shirt. Unisex sizes. Thanks.
"David Mahoney, an RNC arrestee who started his 3 month sentence today, is currently being denied vegan meals at the Ramsey County Workhouse in Minnesota. Without access to vegan food, Dave's mental and physical health will be severely affected.
We are calling on folks to flood the Ramsey County Workhouse with calls to demand that Dave be given proper vegan food immediately! Be firm, yet polite.
"This flawed research telling people worldwide that vegan diets are bad for the bones was funded by the AMBeR alliance incorporated in Malaysia, which owns Amber F&B Nutrition Sdn Bhd, a dairy products producer and wholesaler. This company’s business is the “manufacturing of sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and dairy products.” Once a study is published then the public relations department of the industry takes over and sends “Press Releases” to the media worldwide. Because people love to hear “good news about their bad habits (eating beefsteaks, fried chicken, cheese, and ice cream),” the press and the public revel in this good news, even when the conclusions are untrue as in this case. You might think there would be at least one curious reporter who would read the research before spreading the lie."
Yo, we got Chicago Soy Dairy's amazing Dandy marshmallows back in stock. Ten cases for your pleasure. Also fully stocked on Sheese and Lauralee's crumble candy things that taste like the best Butterfinger you ever had.
"In a Tuesday afternoon press release, the FDA announced that Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto executive, had joined the agency as “senior advisor to the commissioner.” If the title is vague, the portfolio (pasted from the press release) is substantial—a kind of food czar of the Food and Drug Administration:"
"Every Wednesday, Portobello Vegan Trattoria donates 10% of their proceeds to a group dedicated to environmental, social or animal welfare. For this month, Portobello has picked CAAT (Coalition to Abolish Animal Testing).
Portobello is located at 2001 SE 11th Ave (between Hawthorne and Division) and they are open Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30pm to 10:30 pm. The prices are reasonable and the food is great.
Portobello has been really popular so they recommend calling ahead for reservations. (503) 754-5993"

A video of Marie speaking about the importance of environmental activism and a short presentation on her case and the importance of prison support will begin the evening. Come out to support this important eco-prison, feminist, friend and mother. And as always amazing vegan food and drink at the counter.
About Marie Mason Marie Mason is a loving mother of two and a long-time activist in the environmental and labor movements. In March 2008, she was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000; no one was injured in either of them. She accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced on February 5, 2009 to just under 22 years. This is the longest sentence to date for any "Green Scare" prisoner.
About the Movie for Marie: "Antonia's Line" is a 1995 film by Dutch director, writer and feminist Marleen Gorris. The film, described by its director as a "feminist fairy tale," tells the story of the matronal Antonia who, after returning to the anonymous Dutch village of her birth, establishes and nurtures a close-knit communmity. Spanning nearly forty years starting just after World War II, it follows Antonia as she takes over the family farm, befriends a recluse, takes in the village simpleton, and provides a home for a young woman with special needs who has been raped by a brother. The film covers a breadth of topics, with themes ranging from death and religion to sex, intimacy, lesbianism, misandry and love.

So, there's been a lotta hoo-ha about the new candy bars around here, and damn if they ain't good, but I hold a soft spot in my heart for the o.g. vegan candy bars, Tree Huggin' Treat's Crispy Cat bars. I remember living in the boring woods of Vermont and ordering these joints via the internet and them showing up in a little box with melted ice packs, cuz back then they needed to be refridgerated. What a hoot. Anyway, they finally came out with a great new flavor, Chocolate Sundae, and man I think they're just great. Look how happy these doods are:
This picture was actually taken weeks before the new Crispy Cats and has no bearing what so ever on the new flavor. Crispy Cat candy bars. Made with stuff that won't necessarily kill you.
Education is a powerful and essential tool for creating a compassionate, just world for all beings, and we as animal activists ignore it at the animals? peril. In this interactive presentation, learn about the philosophy of comprehensive humane education, which involves helping people make choices that do the most good and least harm for all people, animals and the planet; learn about the importance of approaching global problems from an interconnected perspective, and gain some practical tools for engaging people in exploring the power of their own choices to make personal and systemic change for a better world.
The written word is a powerful way to influence behavior and affect social change. Learn how you can use the communication skills you already have to speak up for animals. Discover where you can gather new tools so that you can strengthen the effectiveness of your written voice. From writing articles in your local paper; publishing a letter-to-the-editor or OP-ED; blogging; or even through personal narrative, the art of the written word is something any activist can tap into. Join Farm Sanctuary?s National Advocacy Organizer, Jasmin Singer, as she walks you through how even a non-writer can get active for farm animals. Jasmin will talk from personal experience in the blogosphere world ? including the trend of blogging as a means to create social change. She will also tell you how she became a freelance writer with several magazines and online publications ? and how you can too. Most importantly, you will leave with the ability to take the first steps in speaking out for the animals by using your written voice to raise awareness and compassion.
Come in and get some nachos. Or throw some nachos on a hot dog. Or come get some kale chips. Or a Jokerz bar. Or a Pluot. Your call. We'd love to move some units today, any units will do.
This talk will discuss the parameters of the First Amendment as it relates to animal rights activism, including publication of information, conduct at protests, and dealing with injunctions.
Grassroots animal liberation activists take on billion-dollar industries every day. Despite the odds against us we refuse to back down and, time after time, we win. This is not luck. This is a result of dedication and understanding the importance of making the most out of our limited resources by building strategic campaigns. Join us in examining how to make our actions count, set achievable goals, and develop campaign strategies and tactics that will help ensure victory.
"I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.
Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes. My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!"
Closing early tomorrow, 2 o'clock, to get our nation's birthday party on. There will be tax on all tea sold, hot or cold, to honor some rich white guys who didn't wanna pay taxes.
Will Potter talks about the importance of community in this movement and how important it is for all of us to support each other in the pursuit of our common goals for the animals. This talk gets to the heart of what this conference is all about and will set the tone for the weekend.
"I was just writing to you guys, various blogs who either knew of us already, and those we follow, just to let you all know that Homegrown Smoker Natural Barbecue is officially opening tomorrow with set hours from 12:00PMish-8:00PM.

"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes."
"Two nights and two days is not nearly enough time to explore the entirety of Portland, but I tried to fill in as much as I could. After doing a little research, I decided to check out an Italian restaurant called Portobello Vegan Trattoria, which sounded amazing. It was definitely a trek from the PSU campus, but the meal was totally worth it. The Tiramisu alone would have validated the long bus ride."
