Yo! A percentage of the sales of the minimall (Scapegoat, Food Fight, Herbivore, SweetPea, and Seven Star) on December 7th will go to the nice folks and chimps at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. I think Seven Star is gonna be closed that day, but I'm pretty sure they're counting the entire week before. So book some accupuncture or massage or whatever. So... yeah, December 7th would be a good day to stock up on random needs or wants, maybe even Xmas shopping? Thanks.
"“We don’t let hog or dairy farms spread their waste unregulated, and we wouldn’t let a town of 25,000 people dump human manure untreated on open lands,” said Gerald W. Winegrad, a public policy professor at the University of Maryland who is a former state senator. “So why should we allow a farm with 150,000 chickens do it?”"
"The pods of "shoppers" blithely fanning out across downtown Portland, some festooned in their fur trimmed jackets, met with a large contingent of compassionate anti-fur demonstrators on yet another Fur Free Friday. The action in Portland was part of a campaign that stretched across the nation today, encouraging people to stop the fur trade in its tracks."
Hey everyone we had a interesting discussion today and was wondering if we can get some input from you. The survey is anonymous and only takes a second. Thank you for your time!
"I'm Vegan is a series of short documentary profiles that will feature vegans from all walks of life, perhaps including you! The project is is intended to address preconceptions about vegans and veganism, which may increase normalization of and appreciation for veganism. It is also expected that I'm Vegan will be a catalyst for some viewers to go vegan. Completed profiles will be distributed for free over the web so that anyone can share the videos with family, friends, and visitors to their own sites. A full-length documentary is also in the works."
Looks like they need peeps to talk to, hopefully outside of the typical vegan stereotype.
"Vegans leading interesting lives outside or at the periphery of the AR/vegan community. Some examples include a vegan accountant who moonlights as a club DJ, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, an ER doctor, a computer consultant who teaches Krav Maga, etc., etc. "
I was at the Let Live event in Portland a couple days ago- front row knitting. After your awesome talk we went directly to Food Fight and bought the film Behind The Mask, went home, and watched it.
We loved the movie, my partner and I both cried. A friend who has been staying at our house sat in on it and the next morning said "I'll never be able to eat meat again." Thank you.
At the Q and A you and others said I should just upload whatever AR material on the net I want and it is doubtful I would be sued- we all want the message to get out there. So I had to put yours up. I don't have much of an audience but at least a few of my friends will hopefully see it. It will automatically go to my podcast on iTunes in the next few days and has already gone to my blog the original file can be found at http://blip.tv/file/1507602 and it will be available in Flash, Quicktime, and some windows thing.
Please let me know if this is ok, I want you to be happy and keep making great films. We gave you $50 at the talk but I'm sure with a little nudge from me we will give some more. Also I forgot to mention I do networking promotions and will make sure the thousands of people who listen to me will get the info about SKIN TRADE and some will give money I'm sure."
"Dolphin rights campaigner Hayden Panettiere's cause is confusing other animal-welfare groups for embarking on a new handbag designing project that uses leather.
The 19-year-old "Heroes" star, who is actively campaigning against the slaughter of dolphins and whales, has announced her collaboration with leathergood manufacturer Dooney & Bourke.
Her "The Hayden Clutch," which uses "soft supple Italian calfskin and trimmed with gold leather piping," will be part of their Spring 2009 collection."
"People's Food Coop still has a bunch of vegan thanksgiving food baskets for free for people who need 'em! they each have a tofurky, lotsa vegetables, pumpkin pie mix and crust, and optional not-vegan cookies (one might call them freegan!) Please call the store this morning to sign up, and they need to be picked up today by 10pm . Thanks! 503-ORGANIC"
To everybody angry at me for being myself on this site and throwing out some verbal lashings at the "foodie vegan" community, sorry. Kinda. Actually, not much.
These Let Live events are not about Food Fight being successful, or us making money, or ego stroking each other through shared respect of our own feel good consumerism. They are about people needing to get off their asses. This has to be a movement of participation or it is headed nowhere. Not saying you have to protest, or home demo, or anything in particular, but you need to be doing your part. And, sorry, just eating healthy isn't gonna cut it for the animals whose lives are at stake.
Pissed at us? Don't like our tone? Don't shop here, I would honestly rather go out of business and work on something that has some greater impact, rather than try to constantly coax along a community that should care enough to participate, but doesn't because it hasn't been bribed into doing so yet. Take that energy you saved by not shopping with us, and put it elsewhere into something that matters.
Folks need to try and understand how frustrating it is, to consistently have a handful of people turn out to issue-based activities that can make us all more effective advocates for the animals. And then have hundreds show up to sample the newest vegan snack. Or to have people change the subject from something that matters to, "When are you getting more nacho cheese in stock?" It's a real momentum killer. It's depressing as fuck to see burnout coming not from fighting the bad guys, but from dealing with the good guys.
Sorry if any thing I've said seemed directed at any single person, I know it's not the SweetPea brunch's fault, I was eating there too. The delicious food had nothing to do with me going or not going.
Sincerely, Chad (not Let Live, not the rest of the elitist mini-mall, not even other folks at Food Fight, just me.)
Just a reminder from your friendly local vegan shoppe that Thursday is fast approaching, and to not forget that Food Fight is here with all your vegan produce needs! Yeehaw. Just got in a bunch of broccoli, celery, cukes, parsnips, beets, carrots, potatoes, yams, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, all that. Ands now, by overwhelming popular demand, we are currently stocking PURPLE TOP TURNIPS!!! WHA? That's right. And at only $1.99 a pound, you can get two pounds for $3.98. Damn.
"Last November, I discovered that turkeys don't die instantly. At least our turkey -- a thick-feathered Tom we'd bought, alive, from a farmer near our house -- didn't succumb right away after its throat was cut.
The bird jerked and managed a few panicked flaps of wings, though the flapping was limited by a metal funnel containing our upside-down turkey (neck and head poking vulnerably out the bottom). Just when we thought the turkey was finished, it thrashed some more. Then, finally, it was silent. "
Good chance to fire off a letter to the editor or at least some thoughtful comments online.
Hey, just wanted to thank Shannon Keith for coming out for yesterdays Let Live "Skin Trade" talk. Even though all you lazy foodie vegans couldn't bother to come out for this great free event. We understand, brunch ran long, or there were free samples at Trader Joe's or whatever, we dig. It's our pleasure to put effort into these things and have crappy turnouts, it's cool, don't sweat it.
So, if you'd like to make it up to Shannon for your weak excuses, please visit her site for her upcoming movie, and if you can help get it finished, she could use some donations. It seems like it's gonna be a great tool for us to have to help combat the fur industry.
Namaste. Blessings. Peaceful holiday. All that.
PS. You're TOTALLY coming out for Fur Free Friday, right?
Yes, we are a little bit, too, so if you don't know what other Thanksgiving centerpiece to cook up, can we suggest our ham tube or Field Roast Celebration Roast? Make a nice brown sugar, orange juice glaze for the ham tube and bake the shit out of it! The Celebration Roast is pretty set the way it is, so you just need to heat it up and serve.
Please get off your lazy Sunday butts and come out to this. It's early enough, so you can be an activist and still have a day off.
Skin Trade with Shannon Keith When: 11/23, 1 pm Where: PSU, Smith Memorial Union, Room 238
With colder weather comes fur season. It starts appearing on racks in stores and on peoples backs around town. Most people don't know what cruelty goes into their clothes as even fakes are often real dog and cat fur. With this in mind, and with the annual Fur Free Friday demonstrations coming up fast, we welcome acclaimed activist and director Shannon Keith who will be sharing segments of her new film Skin Trade, which is in production. Shannon is an animal and civil rights attorney, and the director of the award winning film, Behind the Mask. She is a regular speaker at animal rights conferences around the country and will be discussing the fur industry, her film, and leading a discussion about what we can all do to combat this cruel fashion. This discussion will cover audience member questions as well as how to combat industry arguments, outreach and education tips, and online activism options, amongst other topics.
"In recent days, the Bush administration announced new rules to speed oil shale development across 2 million rocky acres in the West. It scheduled an auction for drilling rights alongside three national parks. It has also set in motion processes to finalize major changes in endangered species protection, allow more mining waste to flow into rivers and streams, and exempt factory farms from air pollution reporting." And you thought your high school government teacher said that Congress made all the laws.
"I'm not sure what's more shocking: the news that the Maryland State Police wrongfully spied on me for months as a "suspected terrorist," or that, despite surveillance of me, officers apparently wouldn't recognize me if I walked into their police headquarters tomorrow. "
Wicked. Vegan marshmallows, in two exciting flavors. Plain and coconut. We also have those chocolate covered smores sorta situations available as well. Man.
"The Bush administration promised not to issue any new regulations after November 1. But now it's poised to implement a rule that could allow individual health care providers to redefine abortion to include the most common forms of birth control — and then refuse to provide these basic services. A woman's ability to manage her own health care is at risk of being compromised by politics and ideology. We need you to speak out now, before the administration implements this rule."
As of today the state has stolen the last two years of my life. On November 16th of 2006, I walked into the nearby Federal Detention Center, was stripped naked, given a jumpsuit, and thrown in a cell for advocating controversial tactics to shut down an animal lab.
The first inmates I met gave me some advice— try to forget you are here. Don’t think about the time. Do your best not to remember the outside world. What awful advice! Although it might make my life harder, I’m relieved that I still bristle at incarceration. I never want to be one of the fully domesticated folks who slowly stop seeing the bars and razor wire and start to consider this place home. I hate prison with a passion. That lets me know I’m still sane.
Back when we were first convicted, a lobbyist for the animal abusers (whose resumé includes representing liquor companies in their efforts to shut down Mothers Against Drunk Driving) predicted that the SHAC 7 case was just the opening shot in a broader war and that soon many activists would be labeled terrorists. He was right, of course, and from the Green Scare, to the RNC arrestees, to the animal rights roundups in Austria, our movements are under attack. Many of us are already behind bars, and more are on their way. I’m hardly an old pro at this imprisonment thing, but please accept the best advice my two years of experience can produce— never forget why you are locked up. Remember the injustices you fought, and ache to fight them once more. To the degree that it’s possible, try to shape your new environment instead of letting it shape you. Finally, while it is important to rage at your chains, it’s also important not to let anger and bitterness consume you. I’ve had the honor of meeting animals at sanctuaries who endured the worst of abuses but maintained beautiful, loving personalities. The prison system will try to erase the traits that make you special, the virtues that led you to struggle against oppression. Resist that attack on your spirit with all your might. Sustain yourself; the world NEEDS you.
In closing, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me and my co-defendants these last few years. I don’t know how I could have withstood this experience alone. I also want to send my love to Jake, Andy, Lauren, Kevin, and Darius. I’m proud to have stood alongside each of you. Finally, solidarity to the Move 9, the RNC protesters, military refusers, Panther grand jury resisters, Green Scare victims, Marie Mason, all imprisoned earth and animal liberationists, and all the world’s political prisoners— from Marilyn Buck to David Gilbert to Sundiata Acoli— you are all an inspiration to me. “Strong hearts forward!”
"The file of Washington area activist Nadine Bloch lists her primary "crime" as "terrorism-animal rights," apparently for taking part in a conference, "Taking Action for Animals," held in July 2005 at the Renaissance hotel in the District. The event, sponsored by animal rights groups, included a protest against animal testing by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Bloch, who trains activists in nonviolent protest techniques, said that although she is devoted to many causes, animal rights is not one of them. She said she did not attend either event."
Go visit our neighbors at Herbivore and buy one these dope new hoodies. And they got these really awesome new wallets with Herbivore designs on 'em.
And... support your local vegan mini mall. Go make a tattoo appointment at Scapegoat and get a slice of cake (or soup?) at Sweetpea. If you feel like coming in to buy your Tofurky, that would be rad too. Although I guess New Seasons deserves your support too...
Check it. Sip won a design contest! Best of all, is who they beat out. A $950 design job beat out those rich foie gras serving fuckers at Ten-01. Go team!
Next benefit movie night is December 14th and we're showing Scrooged! Money raised will go to Pigs Peace Sanctuary, who deserve some extra dough. The Artistery, 4315 SE Division, 8pm, $3. Yay!
"Many people see this movement as a logical continuation of the fight against racism and sexism, and believe that the concept of animal rights will soon be as commonplace as equal pay and opportunities for women and minorities. If that happens—and I believe it will—the effects on the food we eat, how we produce it and the place of animals in our society will be profound."

"Nutshell , Adam Berger's vegan-turned-vegetarian restaurant on North Williams Avenue, closed over the weekend. The news, first reported at Portland Food and Drink, will likely cause much cheer among Portland's militant vegans, a number of whom angrily called for a boycott of the restaurant to protest the continued presence of delicious foie gras on the menu at Berger's other restaurant, Ten-01."
Local collective, Dicentra, is hosting “When Language Runs Dry,” a zine release and discussion about the experiences of those with chronic pain, their allies, and the inter-related issues of care, support, and how we deal with these issues in our community. Presentation by the editors and contributors of "When Language Runs Dry," fellow zine writer, Emiko Badillo, followed by a community discussion on chronic illness, and finally a mini-workshop on practical care tools.

Hey Pilgrim. So we just got a bunch of produce that should satiate all of your Traditional Thanksgiving Bounty needs. We gots parsnips, beets, two types of potatoes, onions, celery, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, yams, broccoli, four types of winter squash, peppers, kale, carrots, mushrooms, you name it. We also got canned pumpkin, stuffing mix, Field Roasts, a bunch of Tofurky stuff, and frozen pies. Wow. So quit pretending not to noticed that dead skinned rabbit in the Whole Foods meat cooler and come visit your friendly vegan grocers this holiday season, won't you?
"As you may have heard, IDA is moving into a new office space. We are now renting a house at 1732 NE Alberta Street.
At the new house, we have 4 feral kittens that are in desperate need of somewhere to go. My co-worker Eric trapped them in his neighborhood. There are 3 females that are all black and an adorable black male with a white face. They have all been fixed. We believe they are about 12 weeks old.
The new house is not a good place for them because in the process of moving, it can get very noisy and disruptive and they are very scared there when people are present. We have them in a separate room of their own upstairs but it is still noisy and disruptive for them.
Since we will be having potlucks and meetings there, it will never be a good place for them to be. If you know of anyone who would be willing to take them in, either inside or outside, please, please let me know. They don't all have to go together but I'd like to let them go in pairs. The little black and white male shows promise of being a friendly cat.
Please help spread the word about these kitties. I know it's alot to ask but I don't know what else to do. If you could forward this email to ANYONE that you think could help, please do so.
You can contact me anytime about these kittens. Here is my contact info:

With this grant we would aim to double our efforts!
Being the longest running music festival in the world,Warped Tour aims to set an example to other national tours and venues showcasing how easy it is to integrate sustainable eco-friendly practices on the road and at home. We are working to transform the way the music industry approaches touring.

This will be made possible by way of more environmental literature ranging from water quality to alternative energy to consumption issues, daily on-site educational experiences, solar powered band performances, volunteer opportunities, recycled art pieces, eco-friendly products, and the like. We will also expand our "eco adventure" program which gives bands the opportunity to learn about humans' impact on the natural environment, sustainable living practices, and degrading ecosystems then, in turn, extend that knowledge to you!
The future is bright for us and we need your help getting there! Please take a few seconds out of your day to vote for the Warped Eco Initiative on Ideablob!"
i am a vegan customer who is helping a friend that regularly does animal rescue. She asked for my assistance in spreading the word on Buttercup the rabbit. Buttercup is a 3 year old male (unaltered) and is a medium-sized crossbreed with very beautiful coloring. ( i have a pic i can send if you give me your email address.) He is intended to be a companion animal, is very laid back and sweet, good with children. she is afraid he will end up as someone's dinner, so I'm targeting the vegan crowd. Are you willing to help spread the word as you are so world famous?
thanks, amy thomas 503-491-8931 acatherine13@yahoo.com "
"If you're addicted to learning about the vegan culinary arts like me, or simply want some vegan holiday meal inspiration, come to the Cooking Vegan for the Holidays Cooking Class on November 16, 2008. "
I want you to meet Loop-de-loop and RC. . These 2 dogs live in my neighborhood. I drive by them every day on my way to work and on my way home. These 2 dogs are living a miserable life on the end of a chain. They are chained 90% of the time. They are tied up far away from their guardians house (as you can see in the picture labeled LoopdeLoop and RC) and they cannot even reach each other when chained. They are chained up by a covered wire that is only about 5' long. Their dog houses are made of plywood and have no bedding in them.
I have no choice but to drive by these 2 dogs because they are on the route to town from my house. It literally breaks my heart every single day. I have sent letters and brochures on the cruelties of chaining dogs to the guardian with no response. I have offered to take the dogs for a walk on the weekends but again, no response. I have offered to find the dogs a new home but the guardian has refused.
Because of driving by them every day was ruining my day, I knew I had to do something. I couldn't stand driving by them any longer. I came up with the idea of offering to build a fenced area for them. Finally, after months of corresondence with the guardian, he has hesitantly agreed to let me build a fence for RC and Loop-d-loop AND get them neutered.
So....this is where you all come in. I'm trying to raise funds to build a fence for RC and Loop-de-loop and to get them neutered. I have done all the research on building the fence and I think I can build it and have the dogs neutered for around $500.00. I will also see that they get better shelter and will counsel the guardian about taking the dogs for walks, giving them time off the chain and hopefully bringing them in the house at some point.
If there's any way you can make a donation to my project, it would mean the world to me. Even a small amount would help. Small amounts add up! I will do this on my own if I have to but if you have the ability to help, I would really appreciate it. If you can't help at this time, please know that I understand.
If I reach my goal of $500.00, any extra monies will be put in a fund to help unchain dogs in our community.
If you can donate, you can make checks payable to In Defense of Animals and mail them to the address below. Please earmark your check for 'Unchain dogs'.
Thank you in advance for your support on this. I know that all of you care deeply for our companion animals and that you would help me unchain all the dogs if we could! This will be a start.
For Loop-de-loop and RC and all the other chained dogs,
Connie
P.S. If you want more information on this situation and/or just want to talk about it, feel free to email me and/or give me a call. My cell number is 360-356-4827 and my home number is 360-666-1578 or you can email me at the email address below."

Hi again, here's some more stuff you gotta know about:
"A Sealed Fate?" Screening Haven't seen this yet, but can't wait. This film is by Nigel Barker, that dude from America's Next Top Model. And was made, well, click this link and read yourself. It sounds great. When: Saturday, November 8th, doors open 7pm, movie starts 7:30pm Where: PSU’s 5th Street Cinema (www.fifthavenuecinema.groups.pdx.edu/ourlocation.html) How Much: $5 (proceeds go to Portland ADL)
"Rushmore" Benefit Movie Night! This month we're showing "Rushmore" and the money (your hard earned $3 ) is going to Family Dogs New Life , a local no-kill dog shelter who could use some help. When: Sunday, November 9th, 8pm Where: The Artistery, 4315 SE Division How Much: $3
What else? More info to come, but on November 23rd, there will be the next installment of the Let Live Acitivism Series, this time it's "The Skin Trade" about the fur industry with guest speaker Shannon Keith. She'll also give everybody a sneak peak at her new documentary, also called "The Skin Trade." Then the next Friday, November 28th is the Fur Free Friday March, you gotta come out for that for sure. Then... plenty more, we'll hit you up later.
Oh yeah, we'd love some of your money too, just for our own personal benefit and well-being. We have some nice new hoodies, other healthy and non-healthy foods, and, as always, condoms.
Thanks for reading, and please (seriously) come out and help keep our community vibrant and alive. We all need to be pushing our limits, learning more, and most importantly, doing more. It's not about consumerism, really, it can't be, or nothing will ever change. Please try and step it up a little bit, in whatever way you can.
Your pals,
Chad, Emiko, Dave, and Eben / Food Fight!
PS. We have a bunch of copies of "Sacred Cows and Golden Geese," THE book on the bad science of animal testing and experimentation. We really want folks to read this, so we'll sell it to you at our wholesale cost. Mention this email and remind us and you'll get it for $12.
"Propereats and Hip Chicks Do Wine are presenting a Vegan wine maker's dinner on Wednesday November 19th. There will be two settings. Five pm and 7;30 pm (reservations only). It will be a 5 or 6 course dinner coupled with vegan wines from hipchicks. The cost will be $40 per person and part of the proceeds will benefit the lighthouse farm sanctuary. Reservations can be made by calling at 503-445-2007."
Just got back from my (Emiko) hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Ate at the first and as-of-yet-only vegetarian restaurant called Green. This place ruled. It's the exact kind of place lacking in Portland. Onion rings! Buffalo wings! Meatloaf! Po' Boys! Breakfast tacos! And it's all delicious. If you happen to be in the San Antonio area (don't know why you would) please visit Green because they have a great thing going on. I miss them already.
""It was like I became this completely different person—someone afraid of Mexicans stealing his job, of admitting defeat in Iraq, of finally going against the status quo," said Michael Walker, one of the thousands of voters momentarily transformed by the mystical enclosure. "The man who pulled the lever inside that booth...that wasn't me. Dear God, what have I done?""
Just got back from our first lunch at our new favorite place in the world. Get thee to Los Gorditos 2, SE 8th and Ankeny, next to CityBikes. Worlds first all vegan taco truck? Maybe? Go eat and tell them thanks for opening up.
"It's an unfortunate truth - too many dogs are up for adoption with too few homes. But one Idaho university is using dogs set to be euthanized for medical training."
Hey vegetable lovers. So we just got in some ridiculous (really good) green kale in today. It's nice and big and crisp. Click on the above link for a great and very simple recipe for this stuff. It'll make you feel real nice. We also recently got in yams and sweet potatoes (yes, there's a difference), three or four kinds of winter squash, huge collard greens, leeks, and some phat beets. Also, if there's any kind of produce you would like to see us carry (I know some of you cats can't get out of bed in the morning without burdock root), stop in or call and tell Eben what you need. p.s. The produce section is that big noisy machine between the samosa warmer and ice-cream cooler.
