"It was a strange end for the mammoth prayer study, which cost $2.4 million and enrolled 1,802 patients who had bypass surgery."
So, the repairman looked at our fridge yesterday. Mind you, we've had it looked at about 5 other times, and they can never find a problem, even though it builds up giant ice blocks in the back of it which they say is because of a leak. I defrosted all the ice overnight, so he could look at it, and he doesn't find a leak, and that's that. Now the thing isn't cooling down now, so I can't put any cold items back in it still. Sorry.
So, still don't expect any cold drinks or cheese or anything fun like that. He's supposed to come back today.
My theory is that the big blocks of ice were the only thing cooling the fridge off in the first place.
The Heartland.
Checking in from the South. Lake Charles, LA. Hanging out with family and a few old friends. Spent last night at a Starbucks in front of a WalMart. This is not Portland. Then went to a 24-hr diner filled with smoke and the sounds of both Huey Lewis and Mark Chestnut. This is not Portland. I'm glad I'm not around to play with the refrigeration, but that's about it. Everybody hi-5 Emiko for running the show on her own. And invite her to dinner at your house. xoxo Chad

hi. so, the fridge it out today. if you want margarine, cheese, or veganaise, you're out of luck. unless you want to go to the big evil chain stores. we still have deli slices, sausages, and fake meat shit like that, but it's all frozen. so, if you want to come get some tofurky deli slices to eat a sandwich right away, you're also out of luck because you'd need to thaw that shit out.
man, we suck.

I miss Chad.
Why does it always seem like my days are full of chaos when Chad's not around?
What a day...
Hopefully hopefully hopefully. But don't get mad if it looks sparce in there. We didn't want to order a lot of new frozen goods just in case it couldn't get fixed right away.
Oh, and if you come in today, we're getting our fridge fixed on now, so don't get mad if the fridge goods aren't up to par.
Oh, and I'm really super tired.

Got some free time on April 5th? Show up at the City Council meeting and don't let only the Schumacher side be heard.
Even though our freezer is broken, we got a new delivery of ham tube, fish ham, steam buns, and shrimp here now. They're hanging out in the storage freezers, so if you come by wanting them, just ask whoever is working, and we'll get some for you.
After a long hiatus, the bestselling vegan cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance is back on our shelves and ready to be fondled.
"This planet will not be saved by their eco-institutions. They are simply a distraction and a bottomless pit for well-intentioned donations siphoned off for the material support of eco-bureacrats, mundane and useless reports, boring committee meetings, and conferences that serve as a forum for people to sell t-shirts and remind each other that we have problems that some day we really must address."
A good read by the good Captain.
Instructions: Keep fingers crossed.
“Actually, one of the solutions is for them to relocate to a boutique type of mall (Bridgeport Village). In that setting the owners will probably be able to lawfully control the protests inside the mall and keep it outside on the sidewalk. The protesters would quickly lose interest. The Schumachers won’t like that solution, either, but they may not have much of a choice,”"

Hey you. Check out this forums post. Leave some thoughts for us. Please.
Bored on Easter? Head down to Lighthouse and hang out with the fuzzies.
I love that they call him a "drunkard."
Not only is he the best singer/songwriter in the world, but he uses what power he has for good.
(This is Emiko by the way. Chad would never say that about him.)
Our freezer is broken again.
Okay, so it's broken again. We still have some frozen foods left, but probably won't be ordering much more for this week because it won't get fixed until who knows when. We have to wait for the part to come in from who knows where, so...sorry.
I'm going to listen to The Prids to make myself feel better.
"The
unusual mild winter created havoc for most hunters, with baby seals clinging to small patches of ice, many of them drowning as the ice melts below them before they are old enough to swim. On his first day of hunting Mr. Lapierre said the conditions were so bad he
only killed 60 seals compared with 500 on his first day last year."

So, if you're in the Bay Area, or Milwaukee, or DC, there are some SHAC7 benefits coming up. Go.
Interesting thread on the VF Forums. I'd been bummed on Earth Shoes for a while, but I had no idea they used fur too?
Yessir. Still going strong.
So, there is a forum post about our
PDX Guide and how we need to update it. Just fixed a few things. How about you take a look and see what else we need to do to it? Thanks.

This almost makes me change my position on this subject.
Also...
Up to our nuts in donuts.
We have a lot of Rise Up Doughnuts in right now. Come get some bitches!
of course the same day we get it fixed, it starts to break again. It's at 30 degrees now, and just keeps getting warmer and warmer. It's supposed to be at -10 degrees. hahahaha. We just happened to get the crappiest brand of freezer that is unfixable. yay! Anyone want to do a freezer benefit for us?
Emiko here. Just came back from a show, and I wanna say The Prids are my new favorite band in Portland. I feel dumb for not every hearing them before because I've been missing out on listening to them for this long. Glad a band is playing the kind of music that is my new wave roots yet with their own originality, not ripping off any of those bands I used to listen to when I was young, like so many bands are doing today. Plus, they're vegan and Food Fight customers. Thanks. I can't wait for your new album.

Frozen foods are back in the store. We'll see how long until the next refrigeration breakdown...
Damn it.
"The Veloshop was burgalrized last night and a bunch of fancy track specific gear was stolen. I'll list a few notable items in the hope that some of it will turn up.
Sugino 75 track crankset.
Dura Ace track crankset.
Phil Wood track hubsets.
Suzue track hubsets.
Pink Phil Wood hubsets.
Pink Chris King headsets.
Phil wood sealed bottom brackets.
A large number of track cogs, Euro Asia, Phil wood, Soma. A range of sizes in black and silver.
White Industries sealed bearing freewheels, a few sizes.
MKS track pedals. Different styles. Black and silver.
That is most of it. They also got our entire run of Campagnolo 8, 9 and 10 speed cassettes. Record and Chorus levels.
If you see anything, don't hesitate to give me a call.

"'I'm learning to take care of animals, because we're building a farm at our school,' said the Marin Country Day School kindergartner. 'You have to feed them, give them water and plants. And you have to clean out their stalls. Otherwise, they get all stinky.'"
Then I get to break out the bolt-gun and give 'em a real how-d'ya-do to the back of the noggin! Tee hee!
Everybody jump in on this discussion. Throw in some ideas. It could be a good good thing.
"All televisions in Cheney's hotel suite should be tuned to Fox News, all lights should be on and the thermostat should be set at 68 degrees. In addition, Cheney should have a queen or king-sized bed, a desk with a chair, a private bathroom, a container for ice and a microwave and a coffee pot, with decaf brewed before his arrival."

"All sorts of things may be natural if you look at human evolutionary history. You could say war is natural, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to prevent war. You could say that male dominance of society is natural; you could possibly even argue that slavery is natural. But none of these things are right. We intervene in nature all the time, and the question is when we’re justified in doing so."

"It's likely that neither Wal-Mart nor Whole Foods will do much to encourage local agriculture or small farming, but in an odd twist, Wal-Mart, with its simple 'More for Less' credo, might do far more to democratize the nation's food supply than Whole Foods. The organic-food movement is in danger of exacerbating the growing gap between rich and poor in this country by contributing to a two-tiered national food supply, with healthy food for the rich. Could Wal-Mart's populist strategy prove to be more 'sustainable' than Whole Foods? Stranger things have happened."
Interesting read.
RiseUp, RIP.
So, RiseUp donuts is calling it quits. There last delivery to us will be on the 31st of this month. We suggest getting them while you still can. Just got fresh ones this morning, and we'll try and get a bigger order this weekend. If anybody wants to get their recipe or wants to carry on the business, you should get in touch with them. Ask us how.
Whip cream just came in. Damn fine in the mouth. We only bought 2 cases, so they'll probably go quick, but don't worry, we'll stock up more next week.
Also, you should buy one of our long sleeve shirts. We put them on sale. Just for you.

So, we hear this B&B is all vegetarian at least. So, if you're coming to town and want to do it in style, this might be a good option.

Tree Huggin' Treats are now cheaper. 2 for $5 online, and $2.50 in store. Wahoo.
Added some new sections to our forums just now, cuz I'm bored. Take a look. Throw some ideas down. Give us reading material.
Uggh. Another one bites it. We learned about this from.... our forums! I think you guys should all get on there and spice it up. We need more folks chatting it up. It's boring just reading stuff from Alan and Ben.
Hey you guys. Thanks for coming to benefit movie night. Pretty good turnout, raised almost $600 for the SHAC7 appeals fund. It's only a drop in the bucket towards what they need, but if we get enough drops going out of all those leaky faucets out there...
Thanks to Melissa for driving down and introducing and talking and such. Good job. And thanks to the other sponsors for chipping in and helping out, Scapegoat Tattoo, Progresive Counseling, SweetPea Baking, Merrimac, Herbivore Magazine, Veloshop, and RiseUp Donuts. If you couldn't make it, feel free to go the the SHAC7 site and donate there.

Dead and buried?
Damn. Showed up this morning to the smell of burning metal. Our freezer seems to be dead, at least for now. No repair guy till this afternoon. We crammed all the stuff into our storage freezers, but are expecting more frozen stuff on Wednesday. If anybody out there wants to take some of this frozen stuff off our hands, we'd appreciate it. Good time to stock up, we'll give you 15% off frozen items if you remind us.
Also, we're closing up early today at 6:30 to set up for movie night tonight. You better all be there. C'mon... Richard f'ing Pryor!
Our forums are back up and running. Thanks Lauren. We owe you.
Sunday, March 19, 2006
Hey. Please don't forget to come to our benefit movie night for SHAC7's appeal fund. We're showing Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip. Monday, March 20th. $5 suggested donation. Hollywood Theatre. 7:30 PM. If you've been wondering how to help SHAC7, this is a good way to start, only $5 and get entertained. Easy.

A good article on the SHAC case from the Toronto Star.
"Curiously, for a case with such serious implications, none of those convicted in Trenton is alleged to have carried out any of the substantive crimes laid out in the indictment — from property damage to intimidation.
Prosecutors didn't provide evidence they knew the perpetrators or had ever communicated directly with them. Rather, the six were convicted of running an Internet site that allowed others access to information that could be used in crimes."

Some good news. Kinda sorta, right?
"SHAC 7 prisoners Kevin Kjonaas and Josh Harper had bail hearings today in an effort to secure their release on house arrest. Kevin was released this evening on house arrest.
Due to some unforeseen paperwork issues, Josh Harper will not be released until this Thursday on house arrest.
Even though all the defendants will soon be out on house arrest, the fight is far from over! They are due to be sentenced to lengthy prison sentences on June 7th and funds are still desperately needed to appeal these atrocious convictions.
Please organize a fundraiser in your area to help raise funds and spread the word. For more information, visit www.SHAC7.com.
All donations should be made payable to "NJARA" and earmarked for the SHAC 7 appeal and sent to:

They said no.
It's nice to see articles like this. At least not everybody out there is willing to bend over for the big bucks.

Kinda fixed 'em. The main page looks like a turd, but at least you can get to the parts and do your thing. It'll hopefully get better soon.
This really really sucks. Do what you can.
Check the calendar posting for this Tuesday. It's such a f'ing shame all this is becoming so common right now.
Damn, the Fur Commision totally kicked our ass with this video.
Friday, March 10, 2006
Our forums have been hacked. Not sure if it's worth the trouble to fix. There are plenty of other better ones out there, like the VeganFreaks one. Thoughts? Anybody know of a secure one? No how to fix this one?
Thursday, March 09, 2006
Not even sure why this guy is locked up, but no matter what, he should be able to eat. It's a shame that there are so many AR prisoners that they are hard to keep up with.
"We will tempt people to try a tasty battered meatless 'gonad' instead."
So, Dan Piraro, of Bizarro Comics fame is doing this comedy tour kinda thing. And we're helping out a bit. Mostly by selling tickets and yelling at you all to go. So GO! All money raised above travel expenses and stuff like that, goes to this farm sanctuary he's on the board of. It is co-sponsored by PETA and PCRM.
We have tickets for $11, and so we don't have to screw with service charge stuff, you'll have to pay with cash.
And, oh yeah, on April 25th at the Wonder Ballroom.
A reminder...
"Dozens of local and national vegetarian food companies will be represented at Portland’s second annual VegFest, a compassionate living fair in conjunction with the international Great American Meatout. It’s on Saturday, March 18, from 10 AM to 6 PM in First Unitarian Church, SW 12th Avenue and Main Street."
New Yves deli slices
Oh hi again. We also got these 2 new flavors of Yves deli slices. Cajun Chicken and Roast-Without the Beef. We haven't tried them yet, but you should, and let us know if it sucks or rules.
They've been here since the holidays, and we want them out of our store. Who says you can only eat these for Thanksgiving? There are 2 left. $10!!
We just got these things in. Kinda whacky crunchy tasty dried tofu-crouton thingies to eat like a snack or on salads. People have been giving them the thumbs up, so...
Dave's bread is on sale right now for $3 a loaf. That's fucking cheap, right? Turns out Dave is not only "killer" but "insane" with bread deals!
Wednesday, March 08, 2006
So, this isn't a formal press release or anything, but on March 20th, 7:30 pm at Hollywood Theatre here in Portland, we're going to be doing a benefit screening of "Richard Pryor, Live on the Sunset Strip" with all proceeds going to the SHAC7 appeal fund. Suggested donation of $5, but nobody will be turned away. Help spread the word, and don't worry, we'll remind you.

How should vegan nutrition be used to promote veganism? Matt Ruscigno, MPH, RD, a vegan of ten years, will be on hand to discuss nutrition that is relevant to vegans and those interested in veganism.
This will be an informal affair and Matt will be hanging around the store from 2:00 to 4:00 if you want to pick his brain. He knows his shit so come take advantage of this.
When: Sunday, March 12th, 2-4pm.
Where: Food Fight! Vegan Grocery, 4179 SE Division
yep.
This trailer makes me want to go skating. Or maybe it's just sitting around in the store watching it rain outside...
From New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance (NJ-ARA) for all those interested:
"As you have read in our previous alerts, Kevin Kjonaas and Josh Harper, 2 of the SHAC defendants, are still in jail.
Janine Motta from our office, visited with Josh this morning. She reports that he is in good spirits and things are going as well as can be expected (they are still waiting for vegan food to come in). They are confined to their cell 22 hours each day with nothing to do and nothing to read except letters from the outside. There are no books, no email, no newspapers, etc. Getting visitors (they're allowed 1 per day for only 15 minutes) and receiving mail are the highlights of their day.
Even if you don't know Josh or Kevin, please take a few moments to drop them a line. What would you say to them? It's okay to start with "You don't know me but..." Talk about your animals, tell them how you got started in animal rights, let them know you appreciate all their efforts for the animals, talk about a campaign or project you are working on, tell them a silly joke, anything! They could really use the support and you'd be surprised how much a simple letter or card means.

***ATHENS, Ohio -- Authorities in Athens said that they were investigating a mountain bike that put the Ohio University campus on high alert Thursday morning.
Athens Acting Fire Chief Ken Gilbraith said that the bike had a sticker on it that said, "This bike is a pipe bomb." He said the university police discovered it overnight, parked outside a campus restaurant.
(there is a band called "This bike is a pipe bomb" and they are from Pensacola, Florida, on plan-it-x records (http://www.plan-it-x.com/) and have a venue (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/core/) and are amazing and fun.)
OU closed four buildings, police blocked streets around the Oasis restaurant, the fire department brought in off-duty firefighters, and the Columbus fire department's bomb squad was called in.
Gilbraith said the bomb experts attacked the bike with a high-pressure spray of water, then pried it open with a hydraulic tool and found no bomb inside.
The university remained in session throughout the incident. The four buildings were reopened by 9 a.m.
A fan of this bike is a pipe bomb who sported the
band's sticker on his bike in athens, ohio is in way
big trouble...
Apparently, after leaving his bike parked on the
street, he returned to find a bomb squad and
handcuffs. He was told that because of the sticker on
his bike he was a threat and accused of being a

Don't cut visiting hours at Sheridan.
We know that family contact is one the leading factors that help people to transition successfully from prison to the community. Many federal prisons, though, limit prison visits to weekends only. Oregon's one federal prison in Sheridan (in Yamhill County) currently allows evening visits on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and daytime visits on weekends and holidays. But the prison plans to cut visiting down to three days from the current five. Wardens have a certain amount of discretion for setting visiting hours. We have to tell the warden that visiting hours shouldn't be cut.
Family members of prisoners at Sheridan need for you to speak up. There are legitimate concerns that if family members of prisoners there speak up, their loved ones could wind up transferred to places too far away to visit. Let's take action in solidarity and support. Take a few minutes to send an email, letter, or fax to Warden Charles Daniels of Sheridan to say that you want to keep the current visiting schedule. Consider making one of these points in your letter:
•Family contact is an important part of successful re-entry to the community.
•The warden may be under pressure from others to cut costs, but we recognize that family visits are an essential part of maintaining a safer facility focused on rehabilitation.
•Limiting visiting to weekends will lead to shorter, more stressful visits because of crowded visiting rooms.
Please take a respectful tone. Although Warden Charles Daniels has discretion to set visiting hours, he is also under pressure to cut costs and often hears from people advocating for harsher treatment of prisoners. Mail letters to Warden Daniels at:

"'This bill will allow our law enforcement officials to continue to use the same tools against terrorists that are already used against drug dealers and other criminals, while safeguarding the civil liberties of the American people,' Bush said in a statement from India."
Drop 'em a line and raise some spirits.
Fire off a letter this weekend please. And send it out Monday. That is your homework assignment.
"Here is the update with Kevin and others. Jake, Lauren, and Andy were suppose to be released today, but due to unseen complications, they will be released on Monday. We are working on getting Kevin and Josh out. Please write to them both at the addresses below (as letters will really raise their spirits; remember all letters are assumed to be read by the authorities, so remember this when writing your letters). Got this email from The SHAC 7 Support Committee. We know a lot of you still want to help them, but might not know how, well, they still need tons of financial help with legal fees, especially for their upcoming appeals. Come on everyone, let's show them we care. Even if you think you're poor, think about these people, probably your age, that are facing years in federal prison. You can't be that poor to not help just a little, right?
"Dear SHAC 7 Supporters,
March 2 was a sad day for activists everywhere, with the SHAC 7 being
found guilty on all counts. As we write this, five of the defendants are
sitting in jail, awaiting sentencing on June 7th. They are all facing
between one and ten years in prison, a hefty sentence for engaging in Free
Speech activities. Universally, activists have expressed their outrage at
this verdict, support for the defendants, and a desire to fight back and
help however they can. There is no question that the SHAC 7 still need
your help. The next step in the legal battle is to appeal the verdict. As
many lawyers have said, most First Amendment cases are not won at the
trial level. They are won on appeal. And the SHAC 7 case is most
definitely one of those instances.
Now is the time that the SHAC 7 again really need your help. In addition
to writing those defendants who are in jail, we desperately need to raise
funds to hire experienced First Amendment attorneys to appeal this
outrageous conviction. Unfortunately, attorneys fees are very expensive
and we need to get the ball rolling immediately. I know many of you have
donated to this case in the past, and we hope that you can do so again.
Donations can be made payable to NJARA and earmarked for the SHAC 7
appeal. Donations can be sent to:
SHAC 7 c/o
NJARA
PO Box 174
Englishtown, NJ 07726
You can also donate online at www.SHAC7.com.
We are all stunned by this verdict but are hopeful that it will be thrown
out on appeal. Right now our friends and fellow activists sit in jail
facing substantial prison time. Let's all do what we can to win this.
Sincerely,
The SHAC 7 Support Committee"
Finally added the Peanut Butter cups for you online customer folks.
Food Fight would love all that crap. Packing peanuts, bubble wrap, anything that we can use to pack up our mail orders. And, of course, we'll always take your closet-full of old paper grocery bags. Just drop it off. Spring cleaning fools!
Thursday, March 02, 2006
"The defendants at this time implore the activist community to not publicly comment on the case, to keep their frustration with the outcome in check, and to remember that the scrutiny on them and actions perceived to be on their behalf can do nothing but hurt them at this point."
Read this for a good update.
Information and discussion series to attend
One of our customers who is a vegan lawyer asked us to post this. Please try to go. It's information we should hear more than ever.
"Hi all,
In response to the recent indictments and arrest of environmental activists and the conviction of the SHAC 7 as "domestic terrorists" a number of us have organized the following series, and invite you all to come participate. And please forward this notice widely to those you know who might be interested. thanks, and see you there!"

a friend just heard it on the radio in NY.
"Animal-rights activists convicted
Six animal-rights activists were convicted this afternoon of conspiring to harass, threaten and stalk employees or associates of a British research company that tests drugs and other products on animals.
The verdict, which came on the third day of deliberations by a federal jury in Trenton, marked a victory for the government in a case widely monitored both by social activists and the industries they often target."

"Bush didn't ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: 'We are fully prepared.'"

"The suit claims that these associates - including Feld employees, private investigators and a former top CIA official - infiltrated PETA and other animal-rights groups over a period of years in order to steal documents, monitor their activities, distract them from their missions, finance opposition groups and otherwise hamper their work."

SHAC7 Update
"Today the fate of the SHAC 7 was handed over to the jury, after 3 weeks of
trial. The last two days were filled with closing arguments from both
sides, with the government having the last word today. Unsurprisingly, the
government ended its closing remarks with a slew of misrepresentations,
outright lies about the evidence, and inflammatory remarks (that are
generally precluded by law). Knowing that he could not establish his case
on legal grounds, Charlie McKenna (speaking for the government) attempted
to evoke sympathy and emotion in the jury, avoiding discussing the legal
issues at stake in the case.
One thing is certain. The outcome of this case is of monumental importance
for both the animal liberation movement and all movements. If the
government wins, it is clear that they will move on to accuse anyone
involved in any successful campaign of being involved in a conspiracy and
drag them into court on draconian federal charges.
The verdict should come down in the next couple of days. The defendants
and their supporters know that they are innocent on legal grounds.
Regardless of the outcome of the verdict, there is no doubt that the
campaign to Close Huntingdon Life Sciences will continue and the
defendants' legal battle will continue until they are vindicated.
The outpouring of support from the activist community has been appreciated
and welcomed. News of the outcome will be reported as soon at it is
available."
