"Hey! It’s official! We’re proud to announce the formation of the Let Live Foundation. We’re gonna try our best to do our best to make things better. Check the about page for all the well-worded details.
Please pass this site around to folks all over. We really think the video section can benefit lots and lots of folks who can’t easily make it out to the bigger AR events or conferences. Hopefully our wee conference here in Portland can have a bit of a ripple effect.
Thanks for checking out the site, we’ll be adding more info and tweaking stuff over the next couple of weeks. Any suggestions, please shoot ‘em our way.
Hey, we haven't been to one of these in a while and you probably haven't either. So, let's all go and meet up, ok? People are sitting in jail, lonely after the holidays and all that, so let's do this and cheer up some folks.
Where: Red and Black Cafe, 400 SE 12th, at Oak, Portland, Oregon, USA
When: Tuesday, December 30, 8pm
Why: cause it's the nice thing to do
What to bring: Dunno, maybe a pen and a few sheets of paper, an envelope or 2?
Great. See you there.
PS. Check this video from last summer's Let Live Conference for related stuff on prisoner support.
Pretty awesome, it you haven't seen it, check it out. If you have, leave a nice review on the site so that others are more likely to see it. Congrats Shannon Keith, you are now in the same league as Smokey and The Bandit 3!
Just wanted to say thanks to everybody who came out to the Let Live event today and to Isa for getting up in front of everybody and shooting her mouth off. And thanks for the cookies too. If you couldn't make it, you can see pretty much the same talk from last year's Let Live Conference by watching the video below:
"Before an event all we had to do was clench our jaws, stare at our competitors, and make a few remarks like, "You're mine!" or "Come and get it!" or sometimes merely laugh maniacally for a few seconds, and they knew we meant business. That's why I don't understand all this thumbs-down business I see the new breed doing today. We didn't need hand signs. No sir. It was our actions while strapped to a bungee cord that proved our valor and nothing else."
"By bringing in an impartial state veterinarian from the Department of Agriculture to inspect an animal, Viebrock's bill aims to curtail abuse of the system by some animal rescue groups that reportedly inject themselves into alleged abuse cases for the chance to sell and profit from the animals."
“We had one meal today - khobbeizeh,” said Abu Amra, 43, showing the leaves of a plant that grows along the streets of Gaza. “Every day, I wake up and start looking for wood and plastic to burn for fuel and I beg. When I find nothing, we eat this grass.”
"While many environmental groups launched campaigns to oppose the sale of the land, one student in Salt Lake City attempted to block the sale by disrupting the auction itself. Twenty-seven-year-old Tim DeChristopher posed as a potential bidder and bid hundreds of thousands of dollars on parcels of the land, driving up prices and winning some 22,000 acres for himself, without any intention of paying for them."
"Millions of yards of ashy sludge broke through a dike at TVA's Kingston coal-fired plant Monday, covering hundreds of acres, knocking one home off its foundation and putting environmentalists on edge about toxic chemicals that may be seeping into the ground and flowing downriver."
"The U.S. Forest Service plans to alter its environmental standards to allow a proposed $800 million natural gas pipeline to run through 47 miles of Mount Hood National Forest."
Hey pals. It’s that time of year again, time for the annual (well, it happened last year too) AR Volunteer Roundup! This year is gonna be bigger and better than last year. Why? Because more folks are gonna show up and get involved, right? Right. Here’s the details:
When: Saturday, January 17th, 6-8pm Where: Vegan Mini-Mall, 1217 SE Stark St, stuff going on in every shop Cost: Free, of course, but you might wanna donate some change to the local groups who are out there busting their rumps.
The idea is that a ton of people can show up, find out what everybody is about, and get involved with whatever group seems to be a best fit for you.
Sound good? Sure it does. Mark it on the calendar and please try to come and get involved. Makes life more interesting than just sitting on your futon complaining that things are not going the direction you’d like them to.
Also, if you’re lucky there may be some soft serve or chili or cookies or something else for you to stuff into your mouth. IF you are lucky.
"If anyone can help, a pit bull needs a home for a week. A lady is about to get evicted due to having her dog in her sons apartment. If she gets evicted she'll be force to go to jail and her dog will be loose on the streets or probably put down. He's a young male pit bull about 35-40 lbs. friendly to dogs, children and people but scared of cats. If you can help please call Scapegoat Tattoo 503-232-4628 or 503-319-5908."
"Speaking at a recent meeting of the British Pharmacological Society in Brighton, UK, Christine Mummery described how using embryonic stem cells to create human heart cells could be a viable and scientifically exciting alternative to animal testing."
From Striking at the Roots blog : "PETA is reporting today that designer Donna Karan has announced that her fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has “no plans” to use fur in the future. This announcement came days after PETA launched their (now offline) DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com Web site and after fashion guru Tim Gunn sent Karan and designer Giorgio Armani a video that he narrated for PETA showing animals skinned alive for their fur and urged them to shun fur in their designs. "
Hey folks, we just added a handful of books to Josh Harper's Amazon wishlist. If'n you feel the notion, maybe grab him something. (please buy through the wishlist so it gets taken off and not bought twice.) And/or write a letter, they really help the time a little easier to handle.
"SHAC 7 prisoner Jake Conroy has just been moved to a new prison. This seems to be good news, at is a lower security prison and is still in California near friends. His new address is below. Please update prisoner lists.
Jacob Conroy #93501-011 FCI TERMINAL ISLAND FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION PO BOX 3007 SAN PEDRO, CA 90731"
"At protests, Gilchrist was often the one taunting police, says Mark Eden of Wellington Animal Rights Network, who regarded Gilchrist as a friend. “If it didn’t involve adrenalin and confrontation, he wasn’t interested,” he says. (I guess police informants aren’t too concerned about getting arrested.)
“He was always interested in who was keen on illegal actions and would often make it known that he was keen to be involved in anything illegal or undercover,” Mark says. “On a few occasions he would take people out for a drive and sit outside a factory farm or an animal laboratory and encourage them to talk about planning a break-in or other illegal activity. He would be really pushy and persistent about planning illegal activities and then would suddenly lose interest, claiming it was too difficult or that he was busy. He was always keen on planning dodgy stuff, but on the occasions when we did break the law, he would always have an excuse and pull out at the last minute.”

December 28, 2008, marks the third installment of the Let Live Series, a monthly series of speakers, workshops and social events dedicated to promoting animal rights activism and education in Portland, Oregon. The upcoming workshop features culinary activist Isa Chandra Moskowitz, celebrated author of Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take over the World.
Moskowitz’s unique approach to activism focuses on education through better food choices, rather than traditional methods. “A tomato can be a revolutionary tool. My goal is to empower people in the kitchen and give them practical skills to change the world one sandwich at a time,” says Moskowitz, whose workshop includes tips on how to get vegan food to the masses, organizing bake sales and potlucks for fundraising and everyday activism.
Whether you are a seasoned activist, curious student or health food connoisseur seeking to enhance your repertoire, this workshop has something for everyone. The Culinary Activism Workshop featuring Isa Chandra Moskowitz will be held on December 28, 2008, at 1p.m. at Portland State University in Room 238 of the Smith Memorial Union Building. Admission is free.
The Let Live Series is brought to you by the Let Live Foundation, Vegans for Animal Advocacy, Food Fight Grocery and Herbivore Magazine.
*****NOTE: WE'VE BEEN DUMB AND LISTED THIS EVENT AT 2PM IN A FEW PLACES, PLEASE IGNORE THAT, THIS IS GOING DOWN AT 1PM, TELL SOMEBODY*******
We're plum out, and we have a lot of holiday orders still coming in. You know you don't want that stuff sitting around your house anyways. (And please, no leaves and twigs included in the bags this time.)
Looks like Wed. And Thurs. are gonna be goofy with the weather, it would be wise to call the store before trying to make a trip to buy stuff. We'll try our best, but expect not-normal hours and not-normal order processing times for you online customers. xoxo, Management
Come eat at Vege Thai on Hawthorne, nobody else is here and they are nice folks. Don't forget to specify vegan meats and no egg. And give Pete a hug from Food Fight.
Andy Stepanian was released from prison yesterday! We wish Andy and his loved ones well, but PLEASE don't forget there are 4 more of the SHAC 7 still behind bars that need your support.
Josh, Jake, Lauren, Kevin.
Take the time to write them, especially during the holidays. You don't know how much your letters and cards mean to them. Go to www.shac7.com for addresses and information.
"The £12m defences of the most heavily guarded power station in Britain have been breached by a single person who, under the eyes of CCTV cameras, climbed two three-metre (10ft) razor-wired, electrified security fences, walked into the station and crashed a giant 500MW turbine before leaving a calling card reading "no new coal". He walked out the same way and hopped back over the fence."
Closing early to get a headstart home to walk Ago and be at the Artistery for movie night. Yep, it's still happening in case a couple of you do show up, we don't want your snowy trek there to be in vain.
"“We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realised,” said Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions. “They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates could experience.”"
Just a reminder about Sunday's benefit movie night for Pig's Peace Sanctuary. Please come even if the weather is doodoo. And try to bring a couple of friends. The piggies could use the help. 8pm, $3. Thanks.
"The ad was bought by the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), a front group that represents the fast food, meat and dairy industries. You might remember CCF from when they attacked Mothers Against Drunk Driving (yep, they represent big alcohol, too)."
"We have started a dedicated and focused anti fur campaign against UNGUR FUR's ( SW 12th and Yamhill. Portland, Or ). We are here to educate the public on the process in which the fur goes through to end up on the bloody racks at a fur shop. "
"Harm Reduction and Intervention in Portland and Across the Northwest brings together practioners in and organizers around harm reduction and intervention in Portland and the greater Northwest.

There's still room for this. We know times are tough, but think of the dog friends.
"It’s on again! Join us at Sweetpea Bakery for a 4 course dinner to benefit Portland’s Family Dogs New Life Shelter, an non-profit no-kill dog shelter for, but not limited to, pups who are at risk of going to doggy heaven before their time."
Here's a post off IndyMedia and something a customer wanted us to post. Talk amongst yourselves....
"As an activist present in yesterday's impromptu Ungar Demo as well as Fur Free Friday, I found something frightening; hesitation of activists to pursue a more aggressive stance. While I have never advocated for violence or even direct insults, I do believe that pressure is needed to facilitate the change we want. Yesterday I saw six activists with no bullhorns, signs or noisemakers make more of an impact than any other demo I have attended. We yelled, we chanted and we really pissed off Ungar.
When some of the chants were stepped up at Fur Free Friday, people started to leave and this makes me upset. It is our First Amendment Right to assemble, protest, and petition and every time we back down we are undermining our whole basis of being an American Citizen. Maybe you don't feel comfortable saying a certain chant, leave the words out you may feel uncomfortable with, change them. But please don't leave, we ARE the voices for the voiceless. If we silence our own voices who will be there for the animals? Read up on your rights, read up on the laws that you think you are in danger of breaking. The campaign against Ungar has been long, frustrating and this is precisely why we need to step it up. Step up our anger against a company that makes money from pain. Step up our voices, step up our dedication and step up our confidence. We can win this fight, we HAVE to win this fight, for the animals.
Six activists, yelling our hearts out brought six cop cars, brought Mr. Ungar in our faces, and brought us all one step closer to winning this struggle.
It has come to our attention that some people on Earth have not seen this video yet. Watching this is the more sure-fire way to make Food Fight workers cheer up, hope you're not too offended by the potty mouth, but if you are... don't write us about it, ok?
"After the Bank of America -- a $25-billion recipient of Bailout Czar Hank Paulson's "Wall Street First" largesse -- cut off operating credit to the Republic Windows and Doors company, executives of the firm announced Friday that they were shutting its factory in Chicago.
Instead of going home to a dismal Holiday season like hundreds of thousands of other working Americans who have fallen victim to the corporate "reduction-in-force" frenzy of recent weeks -- which has seen suddenly-secure banks pocket federal dollars rather than loosen up credit -- the Republic workers occupied the factory where many of them had worked for decades."
"And the star insists he has no desire to give up his love of animal skins - warning that he's willing to "go to war" with animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals."
While we're talking fur (tis the season), here's a link to help you find your local friendly fur farm. In case you want to do outreach, like, pamplets and such.
"After our historic victory with the shuttering of Schumacher Furs, a 112 year-old fur salon in Portland, it is time to move forward. Join IDA every Sunday through Valentines Day, for anti-fur outreach in front of the downtown Portland Nordstrom location.
What: Anti-fur education outreach Where: Downtown Nordstroms, SE Yamhill and Broadway, Portland, Oregon When: Every Sunday until Valentines Day; 2:30 pm to 4 pm
The Nordstrom family that owns the chain of Nordstrom department stores have already made some important steps toward becoming fur-free. Years back they took out the full fur salons from all their locations, and in 2006, they removed fur from their Nordstrom line. However, they continue to sell fur from other designers, claiming that their customers are demanding it.
Please join IDA to educate Nordstrom customers about the brutality of fur. IDA is working across the country to educate Nordstrom, so if you know an activist in another city, please share this information and have them contact matt@idausa.org to join our efforts to make Nordstrom fur free. For more information on this campaign please contact matt@idausa.org."
"Please join us for a demonstration to educate holiday shoppers on the cruelty of puppy mills.
Scamps pet store was recently exposed in an undercover report by KGW Channel 8’s Anne Yeager, who obtained veterinary records and interviewed multiple victims who have purchased sick and genetically defective puppies from Scamps. The story also tells how Scamps buys from puppy mills. If you tried to attend last week’s event and missed us - we apologize - there was a miscommunication. Please come again, the demo is definitely on for this week. The location is the same but please note the time change below.
When: Every Saturday until Christmas starting Saturday, Nov. 29 Where: Outside Lloyd Center, corner of NE 9th Ave. & NE Multnomah St. Time: 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Scamp's Pet store (located in Lloyd Center) is fond of saying their puppies come from kennels that are licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) implying that this offers some level of assurance regarding health and humane standards. The reality is that thousands of dogs spend much of their lives in cramped, cold and filthy cages as "breeding stock". In these “USDA-approved” conditions, adults and puppies are squeezed together, compete for food or water (if any is available) and endure a lifetime in tiny wire cages which damage their paws. They never get to feel the grass, have a toy, a treat, or chase a ball. Many go “cage crazy” running around in endless circles, driven mad by the frustrating hours of boredom and loneliness.
For more information on these demos and/or to get involved with this campaign locally contact Brandy at JustADogMom@yahoo.com."
"My name is Mark Schumacher. I created DISCOVER WILD because I saw a growing need for solid, science-based environmental education that is hands-on and interactive for the student. I wanted to teach children and adults how to think, not what to think about eco-systems.
As the father of three children, a furrier, and avid outdoorsman; I was asked to speak to my children’s school classes about wildlife eco-systems and the importance of fur in America’s history. I discovered when I brought real fur samples into the classroom the children’s attention level rose, and the dialogue between the children and me became more dynamic. My audience was thinking and asking good questions. My “lecture” became interesting and most importantly, “fun” for the kids. Together we were exploring the world of animals and discussing important environmental concepts critical to understanding the dynamics of the natural world."
"Local resident Gary Ingram, 28, spent more than a quarter of an hour transforming a wet, grayish pile of canned tuna fish into something he would actually put in his mouth, sources said Monday."
Hey all. So you did good and ate some vegetables thursday last and now feel like you've done your part, right? WRONG! Just a reminder that we have a calendar section of our site and we're trying to let all the groups post stuff to it, so, hopefully it will stay up to date, we'll try our best to make this useable for you kids. If you ever want something posted, just email us a listing and we'll do our best.

"It’s on again! Join us at Sweetpea Bakery for a 4 course dinner to benefit Portland’s Family Dogs New Life Shelter, an non-profit no-kill dog shelter for, but not limited to, pups who are at risk of going to doggy heaven before their time."
We happened upon this new Ethiopian restaurant in our hood in upper Division, and it ended up ruling! The taste is unlike other Ethiopian food in town. The injera was nice and firm and didn't get soggy, and the food was less greasy than other places and made with mainly organic produce. The owner was really cool and explained how their food rules. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
This is a recent editorial from The Oregonian about pit bulls suggesting there be a state ordinance to restrict pit bulls. Please write the editorial editor give them the correct facts: bobcaldwell@news.oregonian.com
"A federal judge ruled that states, as a last resort, can begin killing as many as 85 sea lions annually for five years, removing animals that state wildlife officials say threaten billion-dollar efforts to save and restore salmon runs."
